charlesdharapak My vintage 1938 King Zephyr Special alto saxophone, made in Cleveland, Ohio, the year my father was born. With its elaborately hand engraved key cups and mother pearl touches on the side keys (these had also had to be shaped and fitted by hand), this was American saxophone production in its heyday. Just got it back from my sax technician. It's playing wonderfully. 2d
  •   charlesdharapak @pt4breakfast no, that was a French made saxophone from 1967. Still have it! 2d
  •   bigcicada Fantastic craftsmanship! A conversation piece with a voice of its own.... 2d
  •   militiahill Beautiful! I always wanted one! Plan on getting one someday.. 2d
  •   victoriaweiqi It's beautiful!!! Must send pics when you play it. 2d
  •   willowbarcelona Thank you so much for telling me this extraordinary horn was made the year your Dad was born. Makes it so much more meaningful. I too love being on the alert for anything made during my late parents' birth year--paintings and music compositions too. Makes them feel still close by when I notice something was made in their birth year. Kind of like how I "wave" to them each time I'm on the West Side highway and pass below Columbia-Presbyterian, where I spent many months as a baby and where they both also spent time. Silly how that hospital that saved us over and over again feels like a 2nd home and that Mom and Dad are still smiling over it. My Dad adored the saxophone too. His collection of old 78s recordings was amazing. Have a great week ahead. 22h

  •   meerabee Do the Secret Service ever ask you for copies of the photos you take of them? Intriguing that they're also a big part of photography at the White House. Makes sense, of course. @charlesdharapak 4d

charlesdharapak #throwbackthursday Oecussi, East Timor, August 2001 -- on a trip with Xanana Gusmao, East Timor's independence leader, as he visits the remote coastal enclave of Oecussi which is on the Indonesian side of Timor island. We traveled by helicopter with Xanana from Dili. In my hand is the Kodak DCS 520 which is based on the Canon EOS-1 camera with 2.0 megapixels of resolution. This was the first digital news camera with an integrated playback screen on the back. Game changer. Not sure who made this snap of me, but it was with my film Leica. #tbt 5d

charlesdharapak Paying a visit to my sax doctor. He's got a fluorescent light in the bell of my 1961 King Super 20 Silver Sonic alto to check for pad leaks (when a saxophone key is pressed it closes a leather pad over a tone hole. A properly sealing pad will be airtight and you would not see any light bleed through from under the key cup) My low notes are gurgling which is symptomatic of a leaky pad. A minor fix. 6d

charlesdharapak These stairs were actually backing up towards me when I was trying to make this shot, so it's slightly off center. After returning from a day trip to Charlotte, NC where President Obama addressed the American Legion on veteran affairs. 1w
