charlesdharapak #throwbackthursday East Timor, September 20, 1999 and Central Kalimantan, Indonesia March 12, 2001 - Every week, if we knew we were covering "the big story", my wire service photographer colleagues (closest friends yet competitors) and I would eagerly await the publication of the weekly news magazines to see who would make the inside pages. The major news magazines subscribed to all of the wire services and they had a selection of everything and we wondered if any of our photos would make the week's edit. If you made it, you "won" and had the respect of your peers. Sometimes Time and Newsweek would send in their contract photographer on assignment, and often they would be shooting the same events we were. We would eat and drink with them on their magazine expense accounts while knowing that we wouldn't get into the magazine that week. The magazine photographer's images would be exclusive and "fresher" since ours had already been seen and published by daily newspapers. Making the cover of a major news magazine as a wire service photographer was very rare. My two Time covers during my "years of living dangerously" in Indonesia. Camera trivia: this was the early days of digital cameras. Image on left shot with a 1.3 megapixel Kodak Nikon NC2000e and image on right shot with the 2 megapixel Kodak Canon DCS 520. I used a Nokia GSM phone to transmit both images (probably around a 300-500k JPEG) from my laptop to the AP photo editing desk and it was sent out to subscribers around the world. Amazing how such small files held up the quality for cover reproduction. (AP Photo/Charles Dharapak) #tbt 5d
