cedarwright Yesterday I took my first XC flight here in Boulder Colorado. I made it about 7 kilometers towards Lyons Co. Enjoying spectacular views as I soared with peregrines, Ravens, and vultures! At one point my buddy Steve Su who I landed near said a hawk was flying towards him with a snake and he was afraid it might drop the snake in his lap! Ha! #flyfree @thenorthface @fiveten_official @bluewaterropes @pickybars #lifepoints 2d

cedarwright Patagonia, Fitzroy, the site of some visionary solo ascents by @deanpotter #flyfree also the site of an incredible wing suit flight by @seanleary which I helped facilitate and document along with @renan_ozturk And @senderfilms Now, in the space of a year these two guys, my most influential climbing mentors, have died proximity flying. While BASE jumping aways seemed too risky to me, I understand the appeal, and think that it should be legalized in National Parks. I firmly believe that National Park land is ours upon which to risk our own lives as we see fit. Dean and Graham in Yosemite and Sean in Zion National Park all jumped in the decreased visibility of dusk conditions to diminish the possibility of getting arrested, and it seems to me some of the risk of BASE Jumping would be eliminated if jumpers were allowed to jump in perfect daylight conditions without having to worry arrest when they land. There is a famous BASE fatality in Yosemite where Frank Gambalie actually died when he jumped in the river to avoid the rangers. There would still be fatalities of course if it were legalized, but at least there would be true freedom in the parks, and I for one would love to sit in El Cap Meadow and watch people BASE Jump, and I would very much like to paraglide there. I think we as Americans tend to be too averse to risk even when it is not our own, and that we should take a page from the Europeans where these sports are allowed and celebrated. 2w
  •   chris__mcnamara Well said. 2w
  •   carmeniux I truly hope the National Parks System reconsider and allow BASE jumping and the ability for soloists to use parachutes as backups and hopefully minimize casualties with such a dangerous sports. Peace to all. 2w
  •   c_celine_fr Perfect shot ! 2w
  •   tworektj I feel the same way about the nps and their policy towards BASE jumping. Well said. 2w
  •   rocklizzerd Christian is in Co now... Got his new phone and address for you. Where should I send it? @cedarwright 2w
  •   blakejbatchelor @cedarwright how can we get involved in facilitating this change? What legal/political groups are involved besides the nps? Do they have to pass an amendment? How does that process work? Is there an organized group or website working towards this goal? Please continue with your words of wisdom and promoting awareness of the issue. I don't BASE either but have always been in opposition of the nps's dangerous and immature restrictions. 1w

  •   buckeyenic007 @d.tour not at all. The question is usage. What can/can't you do. Public is composed of mixed interest with the general "why can't I" attitude. 4d

cedarwright When I arrived in Yosemite Valley, Wide eyed, and possessed by lofty dreams of climbing El Cap and Half Dome, Dean Potter was one of the first guys I met. At the time he was a full fledged unsponsored dirtbag, living in Camp Four and working for Yosemite Search and Rescue, and had not yet started BASE Jumping. We became fast friends and I had the extreme good fortune to have Dean take me under his wing, teaching me the finer aspects of Speed Soloing on routes like Royal Arches and Snake Dike, and eventually full fledged speed climbing on El Cap. Dean also introduced me to slack lining and we spent many a day lounging in the meadow and walking the line and this is a photo I snapped on one of those days. Looking back we really were living a unique and close to utopian lifestyle. I have always been a little insecure, and during these formative years, Dean really believed in my potential more than I did, and had this philosophy that eventually wore off on me, that our attitude creates our reality, that the first step towards achieving a larger than life dream is to believe it is possible. I owe Dean one of the greatest gifts I have ever received, the ability to believe in myself. Eventually I watched Dean's rise to super stardom and was excited but also jealous to witness his transformation to fully sponsored adventure athlete. I thought to myself, "I'm going to live that lifestyle some day too, and every day I'm grateful that somehow I pulled it off!" Dean influenced me in so many ways, from my early years as a speed climber and soloist, to my pursuit of a life as a professional climber. I'm grateful to have known one of the great legends, rebels and inspirations of the climbing world, and sad he left so soon. 2w

cedarwright With Yosemite unseasonably rainy, we headed to red rocks and on the recommendation of @jessehuey we climbed the wild modern classic, Velvet Tongue 5.12d, which has some of the most bizarre, unlikely, and fun climbing I've done in quite some time. The fact that my wife @nmilfeld sent is especially heroic, as she had to do an all points off dyno to a hold in the corner, which is pictured here! Now back to boulder. @thenorthface @bluewaterropes @fiveten_official @pickybars 2w

cedarwright Well... It's rain in the forecast indefinitely here in Yosemite, which is great for drought plagued California, but not so great for my El Cap hopes. Golden Gate will have to wait, but I got one last day of climbing in with the lovely @nmilfeld before the storm. Already getting psyched for Fall in the valley... Hopefully it's a little less rainy. 3w

cedarwright If you hike to the top of El Cap, you are rewarded with this wild view of Half Dome and The Sentinel! @nmilfeld trudged up today with me to give me a belay on Golden Gate, which still seems too hard, but too fun as well! 3w

cedarwright This is the "move" pitch.. A heinous 5.13 boulder problem about 2000 feet up el cap! @emilyaharrington and I have been dialing in the moves on the upper 1/3 of a route called Golden Gate on El Cap. This section is right at my limit, and is a huge question mark for me and my hopes of a continuos ascent. Fingers crossed. #poormansdawnwall #elrapitan 1mon

cedarwright An oldy but goody from my horrifically awesome trip to the Czech Republic, shot by @timkemple who is pretty handy with the camera! Incidentally, Tim coined the term getting "Cedared" which is a loose synonym for getting a tad sandbagged! And now a random heartfelt thank you to my sponsors who have enabled me to live a Peter Pan lifestyle! I'm effectively worthless in mainstream society thanks to support from @thenorthface @fiveten_official @pickybars @bluewaterropes @blackdiamond 1mon

cedarwright I'm excited to announce my newest sponsor @pickybars !! The bars are delicious, and the company was started and is run by legit bad ass professional runners and bikers, with a wonderful sense of fun and humor! I mean with names like Ah, Fudge Nuts! Cookie Doughpness and Blueberry Bombdizzle, you know this is a crew that doesn't take things too seriously! These aren't glorified candy bars though, they are all real food, and made for athletes with a 4:1 carbs-to-protein ratio, which is optimal for nutrient absorption and recovery. Picky uses #lifepoints which is right in line with my philosophy in life, that it's all about gaining wild and memorable experiences, not climbing a financial or professional ladder or... ahem... Playing it safe. I really want you to try them, so just go to their website and use my super secret squirrel special discount code cedarsaidso to get 20 percent off the entire site for the next week! I bet you'll love these bars! Oh yeah, and my ultra running hero @robkrar is also on the #pickyteam and that guy is half gazelle and knows something about high performance!! Woohoo!! 2mon

cedarwright If you don't follow @allterrainpug you are straight up missing out on the most bad ass pug in the game. Here he is cranking out some serious 5th class paw chimney! Gus once got lost for 7 days in the wilderness and covered nearly 20 miles of rugged mountain lion country before he was found... that's how he got the nickname all terrain pug! He is a walking snorting miracle and I'm thankful for every day I get to spend with him! He's the most loving, bad ass little dude I've ever met! #allterrainpug 2mon

cedarwright Over the last few weeks I've taken a deep dive into learning the art form of Paragliding. Learning to think and soar like a bird has been one of the most gratifying experiences of my life and I haven't felt so excited about a new sport since I discovered climbing nearly 20 years ago! This is a foot mounted selfie from one of my first mountain flights which lasted for over an hour. I'm very excited to explore the possibilities of combining my two favorite sports in the future!!! @mattsegal @thenorthface @fiveten_official @bluewaterropes #skycrack 3mon

cedarwright The wifey @nmilfeld crushed Vasodilator 5.13a today, and I got to film it all on my new toys! For the camera freaks out there, this is a still from the a7s with the Zeiss 15mm f/2.8 mounted, on which I was capturing 4k video using the Atomos shogun. I also shot top down footage with my new FS7. I'm all 4k now, and shooting mostly on Zeiss primes... So in camera talk... I'm real effing stoked! Woohoo! #camerageekforlife 4mon
