cbrentlane She learned how to say cheese from her momma. After a couple nights away this week and with the DAT over, it was a real treat to take this little darling out on a daddy-daughter date. And when we got home, she asked to 'nuggle' - so we may have cuddled up on the couch, watched a whole movie, and pushed back bedtime. Sometimes, you've just got to let go of the structure, bend the rules, and show your kids how special and loved they are. I sure love this little charmer! 1d

cbrentlane By the absolute grace of God and with so many of my friends and family praying for me today, I walked out of the DAT with a very competitive score for dental school. I'm humbled by God's provision and by my beautiful wife sticking with me as I studied night and day over the past few weeks (and months). Rejoicing in God's goodness and provision today! Next step: applying and hopefully some interviews this fall! Thank you to everyone for your prayer and support. 2d

cbrentlane Great night out with my girls at the @durhambulls game. So glad to meet many of @lanesaraann's delightful coworkers. Shoutout to all of the hardworking nurses of UNC's MPCU! 1w
  •   kap2ure Hey man! Are you still living in Baltimore? 2d
  •   cbrentlane @kap2ure Sadly, no! We moved to NC last summer for my job. It's where we grew up and we have grandparent support now that we are parents and all. We sure miss Baltimore every day though! 2d
  •   cbrentlane @kap2ure Your little guy sure is growing! Are y'all still in the city? 2d

cbrentlane A thoughtful birthday greeting from my SON today, waving "Hi, Dad!" That's right folks - we are having a BOY!!! I've loved being a daddy to a little girl and I can't wait to even out the Y chromosomes in our home with this little fellow!

In every sense of the word, we are so #blessed by our great Heavenly Father. May I care for my little ones like He does for me!

cbrentlane She climbed up there on her own and asked for her snack, water, and pool toys.

She then proceeded to people-watch for a span of several minutes. Oh my, how we love this brilliant little girl!

cbrentlane Our neighborhood pool opened this weekend. And it looks like we've got a little fish on our hands!

E loved splashing around in the big pool with her momma and daddy. She even went underwater for the first time. This little bean sprout is growing so quickly!

cbrentlane Exciting news in the Lane house - you're looking at Eliza's very first picture with her new baby brother or sister!

This post is about a day late, but it's for #nationalsiblingday nonetheless. Can't wait to meet our new little one at the end of September! Eliza's world is about to be forever changed.

cbrentlane Today, my family laid to rest one of the most big-hearted givers our small town of Edenton has ever known: my Grandaddy.

This is a man who spent decades pouring his life into countless young guys on our high school football team, bridging the gap from field to home as their coach, advocate, and friend. When he landed me as a grandson, he didn't exactly get an all-star athlete. But I'll never forget how he'd still come to my games to support me (even though I spent a good majority of time on the bench). He was the type of guy who always believed in you and never ever gave up on you - just the type of role model so many young men need in high school.

There's a million things I could say about him. So many good memories come to mind. When it came down to it, my Grandaddy was a selfless fellow and he lived to help others succeed. Thank you for being such a pillar of our family and our community, Grandaddy. There's a whole lot of love for you in Edenton and across the state of NC!

cbrentlane My sweetheart Sara enters her 27th year today. It is difficult to put into words the gratitude, love, and commitment that my heart feels for her, but by golly, I love this young woman a whole lot!

I've never met a more patient, encouraging, generous, slow-to-anger, tender, and virtuous woman in my life. She is such a strong mirror to our daughter of what God-honoring womanhood looks like and I'm so immensely proud of the way she carries our family and keeps us all together.

To the woman who gives and gives and gives and pours herself out daily for the sake of me and Eliza, I want to say thank you and I love you. You're a bigger encouragement to me than you'll ever know.

Happy 26th, my little bird!

cbrentlane You bet your bottom dollar I do!

I love this brilliant, silly toddler of ours. Nothing tops a fun-filled Daddy night paired with special pajamas thanks to @lanesaraann's thoughtful planning. Oh man - my heart is full with these two.

cbrentlane It was the best of years, it was the worst of years.

2015 brought so many joys: a growing little girl, a new home, seeing siblings, parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins much more, a new community of Christian believers to grow with. But there were tragedies, too: leaving Baltimore and missing so many wonderful friends and family, the painful sting and rejection from losing my job this fall, and seeing a loved one face tremendous health issues.

In the midst of the joy and pain, I still trust that God is good and has a plan for redeeming all of His people. "And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose."
- Romans 8:28 (ESV)

cbrentlane Let me take a moment to lift up and recognize the sweetest, most giving, hardest-working person I know: my wife Sara, the most beautiful thing I think God ever formed.

My wife is many things; a momma to a sweet little girl, a friend to many, a companion to my heart. But tonight, she is also a nurse. And before I married her, I didn't really know what that meant or what it required.

Right now, she's getting into the first few hours of her 12 hour shift at the hospital. She worked the same shift last night and she certainly didn't get the 8 hours of sleep today that most of the rest of us get between our days at work. Tonight, running on a limited supply of energy, she's juggling the needs of several patients and she will be on her feet all night. She likely won't have time to stop and eat her lunch (or whatever you call a middle of the night meal). She'll be facing new challenges head-on, wracking her brain as she tries to monitor and help treat complicated medical issues that she's likely never seen before (the body has a way of malfunctioning in new and different ways all the time). She's working to make sure someone's grandmother or sister or best friend sees tomorrow.

Every part of what she does is a selfless act of service. She and every one of her coworkers choose to do this job that requires complete denial of self in pursuit of their patients' best interests. The job isn't glamorous and it won't make you wealthy. And plenty of the time, nurses have to step beyond their role as healthcare provider and step into the role of social worker, dealing with grief-stricken families and broken situations. It's not in her official duties as a nurse, but Sara will humbly take on the task. Because she cares and she has the power and love of Christ flowing through her and out through her hands. Sara will run herself into the ground tonight making sure the doctors are noticing the right things and the patients are getting the care they need. And after all is said and done, she'll rarely ever hear a thank you or an encouragement that she did the right thing. But she did, and she does - every night that she steps onto her unit. •   cbrentlane If you know a nurse, I bet he or she is just like my Sara. So tell them you love them and that they are doing a fantastic job serving our mothers and brothers and teachers and sons. Because they need to know that they are setting a tremendous example for the watching world, demonstrating firsthand the selfless servant's heart that Christ longs to create in us. Tell them how strong they are and how encouraging their work is to all of us.

I love you, Sara, and I am proud of the way you've heeded God's Word to live a life of reckless abandon to seek and serve the lost, both at work and in our home.

You're the absolute best nurse, mom, and wife that has ever walked the earth. I love you, little bird. Come home, soon! 6mon

cbrentlane Putting up Christmas lights is one of the biggest things I've looked forward to in this first year of owning our sweet little home. I was like Clark Griswold out there this year with no ladder but a big heart, stacking odds and ends to reach my roof, much to my former-trauma-nurse-wife's dismay.

Anyway, this is a small display for our first year on a tight budget, but I hope it serves to bless our neighbors and others driving by. Merry Christmas, y'all! (And if @lanesaraann would let me, I'd probably leave them up and keep them shining 24/7, 365.)

  •   cbrentlane @sarahgracesings Our girls are jammie twins! They are the absolute cutest pjs we've ever seen. 6mon
  •   cbrentlane @_shnatalie We went to dinner and a movie Saturday and saw it! The grandparents babysat and we LOVED the movie. It was so good to see it in film, especially since the book ended things so swiftly. The visuals gave a nice sense of closure to the series. 6mon
  •   _shnatalie @cbrentlane I agree! It was definitely good closure for the series. Glad to hear you were able to have a lovely date night! 6mon
