burton1b This isn't a great picture of it but I had the most interesting mushroom formation in my front yard this morning. Never seen this before. I am dubbing this formation as either #MushroomHenge or #AlienMushroomCircle. 1w

burton1b I was cruising Facebook when I came across this post of a friend of mine. It was written by a guy named Matt Walsh. I don't know who this guy is but I went ahead and read it anyway. After I finished the post I just sat and thought about what he said and the more I thought about it the more I felt I needed to share it. Some people may not agree and I might even lose some followers over it. I hope not. The post is about the apparent suicide of Robin Williams. I liked Robin Williams and my post is more to let people know that if they are contemplating suicide to please stop. It is not the answer to depression. Let me say that again. SUICIDE IS NOT THE ANSWER TO DEPRESSION. I've seen all the posts. The main one that comes to mind Matt mentions. It's the one with Aladdin hugging genie telling him he's free and relating that to Robin's fight with depression. WOW. The only thing that his suicide freed him from...is life. He's NOT happier now. He's NOT in a better place. He's just dead. Now his family is forced to deal with the grief of losing a loved one. They didn't lose him to some debilitating disease. He CHOSE to take his own life. If you can chose to take your own life then you can damn sure choose to keep it. I can't believe the public is glorifying his suicide with this garbage that he is now free or in a better place. All this does is give people who think that suicide is a way out to actually go through with it. suicise is NOT the answer. It's not. Life is the answer. Joy is the answer. Finding people who love you and care about you and let the warmth of their love surround you is the answer. Please don't consider suicide. It just hurts the people you love. I apologize if I offend anyone with this post. 2mon
  •   annnapples I agree with everything, well said. 2mon
  •   kim_o_sabe @burton1b while I agree with the general spirit of your message, it has many flaws which simply do not work in reality. Firstly, using guilt as a way to change a suicidal person's state of mind is likely to cause further issues. It's easy to hold opinions on such a subject as suicide but try saying any of this to a suicidal person while they're feeling suicidal or while attempting (often failing) to kill themselves and you're not going to get through to them. There are no easy answers and it is both their choice and responsibility to decide what to do next. In the dark depths of all consuming despair, trying to imagine anything else often isn't an option but adding possibilities to their beliefs is. Be more considerate throughout your own life and help to spread tolerance, generosity and love, as you could make all the difference without even realising it. 2mon
  •   smithinabottle I have lost two friends, an ex-boyfriend, a former co-worker and a cousin to suicide. I have seen more than a fair share of the pain these actions leave the survivors with. The sad reality of it all is that when someone reaches that point in their life, they're no longer capable of thinking about other people. They no longer care how those other people will feel when they are gone. They only seek to end their own suffering and at that point, their pain and their suffering is all that matters. All they know is the pain that they are experiencing can be ended quickly. I do believe that suicide for medical reasons, to prevent burden on one's family is an exception here. But the truth of it is, most suicides are the result of depression. And every single person I mentioned who had committed suicide that I knew in my life, they were being treated by Dr.'s for their depression. Sometimes, there is just no hope, there is no getting well. 2mon
  •   burton1b @kim_o_sabe @smithinabottle I to have experienced the pain and loss die to suicide. I am not a doctor nor do I suffer from depression so in no way am I offering a solution to depression or can I begin to understand what having depression begins to feel like. I'm not a very eloquent person and I tend to ramble so I probably wasn't saying exactly what I was thinking. The main purpose of that guys post and my post is not the suicide (though I still think a choice has been made) but it's how we are reacting to suicide that I really have a problem with. It's when we tell people "oh, he is no longer in pain" or "he is finally free" that I have a problem with. Because what happens now is that a person who is thinking about suicide hears that and says to themselves "yes, I can end my suffering if I just end my life" and it empowers them to go through with it. It's like we are telling people who suffer from depression that suicide IS an option. I just have to believe there are other options. I really appreciate y'all's responses. 2mon
  •   _florida_.blonde_ Thank you. Someone needed to say that. If only more people could know. 2mon
  •   tyrrhenian One thing I think you're missing, is that often suicidal people think they are doing a favor to those they love. Depression is a son of a bitch. 2mon
  •   burton1b @tyrrhenian I agree with you 100%. I just want to be sure that everyone understands that I am NOT being judge mental of the people who actually commit suicide. I don't want to give that impression. I have no idea what anyone with depression is going through. However, my beef is with the way we talk about it after the fact. How we say that they are 'free' or they have been 'released'. Which sends a message to people who suffer from depression that it's OK to seek this resolution to their depression. That it will give them the answer they're looking for. I am thinking especially of kids who suffer from depression. I teach 12 and 13 year olds and I can't imagine one of them taking their own life because they hear us adults saying the someone is now free because they took their life. I think we should try and send a message that this is NOT the solution and that anyone contemplating suicide should choose like instead. I'm probably rambling again and I apologize. 2mon

  •   burton1b @miss_beeutiful are a trailblazer? Or using Snapshot? 2mon
  •   talxya I need this! Is it any good? 2mon
  •   burton1b @talxya Edmodo is a great tool. But I guess what you are trying to do. 2mon
  •   talxya :) for my 2nd graders to stay connected 2mon
  •   burton1b @talxya definitely. I guess the main good thing is that it's free. Snapshot will help you make some common core assessments by grade level and content to determine if a student understands material. If you're a 1:1 school it would be great. 2mon
