briandanielbaker Sometimes you get sad news that isn't the sort of thing you can just wait out and then bounce back from. It's news that affects the future, even affects immediate choices, and causes you to realize you'd gotten the past wrong too: deception, disappointment, getting used by people you thought shared your goals. You look back, and replay the records and the memories, and their former harmony is now a dissonance. Something has changed in a way that will probably never come back again—and everything is left on a sour note. 4d

  •   calistalee Funny how the past stays with us. It's always there since we can remember it, but we can choose how much we let it affect our future. And that, it seems, is quite the struggle. 4d
  •   cherie_candice That feeling is all too familiar. Know that you are not alone. 4d
  •   me_thru_imagery But change is inevitable and with it comes growth/opportunity. It is not to say it does not hurt at times and something we all suffer at the hands of but know it leads to new paths. Or at least this is what I have been force feeding myself over the past few months. 4d
  •   beencaughtsnapping Prayers your way, @briandanielbaker. In consolation, know that the above photo is one of the loveliest that you've ever posted. One step at a time, brother. 4d
  •   acheekydesign I truly understand, as we've received news this week that was devastating.... I do agree with the above comment, though. Beautiful photo.... One of my favorites. 4d

briandanielbaker Alternate version of @jadeloveless's first remote collaboration with me. Her selfshot, my iPhone edit. #BDBphotoeditingmagic

The other version is on her page, with this caption: "Hands [were] shaky as the girl in the mirror gazed at me, she is lovely, that can't be me, her tummy bravely showing, so much skin exposing, but a smile, happiness her lipstick, she stands and hears the camera click, click. This is loving yourself in a moment, holding yourself up tightly, reflecting on the flaws, but that's the cause of beauty to us all."

briandanielbaker Sitting with Amber at Subway right now and reviewing the photos we've taken thus far today, and—I gotta say—there's just no way I could sufficiently express how good it feels to shoot with a girl who's never shot (any style) before, and to hear her gasp as she sees herself in a new light. "Brian, do you see these? Do you see this?! Look how good I look!" I could die a happy man. I love my life, and I want everyone to see more than just a body. See the heart, see the person, see her intellect, see what it means to someone to embrace strength and weakness alike, to accept the self first and then to challenge the self to be the best one can be. This is not about worshiping the self, but about worshiping our Maker, who made us (and flowers and sunsets and clouds) beautiful. 6d

briandanielbaker Thank you, Antonio, for snagging this behind-the-scenes photo of me taking [the photo I posted a few days ago]. It was fun exploring that abandoned mall in LA!

And mad respect to Jasmin and Genesis. The latter had never done a shoot before.

briandanielbaker @SuckFreeG and I have been Instagram friends for forever. And finally got to meet! Awesome, beautiful girl.

Shooting with @modeljenlynn and @missmaaddii this weekend, also long-time Instagram friends I haven't yet had the pleasure of meeting in person. I'd consider this road trip a success!

briandanielbaker What do you do when you've made a mistake and hurt someone unintentionally? Do you cut them off—hurting them more by doing so—because their continued existence reminds you of your shame? Or do you work past the discomfort, in the name of mutual respect, and do your best to right the wrongs?

Even when we ignore each other, our lives are still entangled.

  •   chuck_best I think that's the question of life bro and you can't have a right or wrong answer to that. I'm just saying I've done both and it was hard and it sucked. All you can do is hope you don't have to do it again 2w

briandanielbaker Explored the Sunken City with @Astraia_Suicide today and looking forward to shooting with her more!

It's certainly refreshing meeting confident people who can "hold their own" in conversation but remain humble. Today I got a chance to see how perceptive she is at navigating unexpected issues getting flung her way. Awesome person. Definitely going to be making more art with her.

briandanielbaker I'm in California till the end of the month! Hit me up if you want to shoot! I'm shooting in Sacramento tomorrow, then driving back to San Francisco, and then it's on to Los Angeles this weekend, with a trip to San Diego in the works too.

More of my work is posted on @BrianDanielBaker_SAwH.

The image above is a throwback-Thursday shot from a scene that happened in my backyard, back home in Nashville. A little photo of a photo of a photo!

briandanielbaker Tap the blue geotag above and explore this amazing San Francisco location with me. The mausoleum was a veritable labyrinth of scores of rooms filled with memorials—sometimes resembling a gorgeous floral courtyard with water fountains, other times resembling empty academic hallways or used bookstores with hidden corners. 3w

briandanielbaker I'm so aware today of how the world is filled with cruelty, as my mind is flooded with hurtful things people have done (and not just to me). And this old collaboration image (selfshot by an IG friend and iPhone-edited by me) is inspiring me as if it were someone else's work. It's reminding me there is beauty in who we are, and that there's this cycle, this stream of awareness, that there is always inspiration and light and redemptive knowledge available to us, and that this goodness can always be found if we know how to look, through the lens of grace and not judgment.

Sometimes I also find my old poetry books guiding me and teaching me, as if I hadn't written them myself. I encourage the reader: create things. The life you save may be your own.

briandanielbaker Meet Daphne.

Along the way to California (where I'm staying for a month), I stopped in Seattle and got to meet up with a college friend I hadn't seen in nearly a decade. She's pregnant with her third kiddo and, I gotta say, she makes some adorable little human beings!

Daphne loved plucking flowers for me. Leaves and twigs too. And apparently, after I left, she kept asking her mom, "Where did Brian go?" California, kiddo. California.
