bradbarian My world has become vertical.
My view of it sandwiched between the canyon walls of man-made brick and concrete piled up to house the dreams and drudgery of the day-to-day. Light filters through the gaps and carries motes of dust, pollen and smoke and my eyes begin to itch, a raspy feeling builds in the back of my throat like long suppressed emotions burning their way to the surface.
At times the colour drains from my world and seeps into the cracks and gaps in the bluestone curbs and only the faintest echo of beauty stains the edges...reminiscent of a fading Hollywood diva having applied her makeup and arranging herself to reflect the last vestiges of youth and beauty beneath her skin.
It's like a hook that catches my heart, reeling me back to another time and it's the setting of that hook that interrupts my breathing, convincing me that an ill-timed exhalation will rob me of the moment.
But the moment passes as it always does and I walk into the silken embrace of the sun, its scent filling my head and fuzzing over the surface of my brain. I feel almost drunk, a little giddy, and my shadow lengthens along with my optimism as I step towards the west...because there is gold in that direction and a man's fate is tied to his dreams of treasure

bradbarian So I'm doing the drunk walk (the one where you take longer than normal strides so that your upper body doesn't get ahead of you and crash) along the sidewalk and suddenly to my right is this super narrow gap between buildings, at the end of which are some funky lights and drunk people partying on the street. Pretty much Narnia for assholes is what I'm seeing.
So I head down there because, well because I was drunk and feeling asshole-y and
I meet a bunch of drunk Irish rugby players (I know, what other kind are there?) and some drunk artists celebrating a gallery showing and all of us buy Chinese food and eat it together on the street whilst we enjoy some more beers. I left when the drunk Irish rugby players started playing Red Rover in the narrow gap between buildings because Red Rover always ends in crying and I can't stand crying people

bradbarian My current favourite bar...two shipping containers set into a vacant parking lot, covered with a motley selection of corrugated plastic sheeting and surrounded by chainlink fence. It's what I'd call 'asylum-seeker chic' if I was a less politically correct person...oops, guess my PIC is showing.
It's Section 8 in Tattersals Lane and only about two blocks from where I'm living...another lovely feature is the dumpling house next door. You can drain a few tallboys and enjoy the scent of the food and when you're ready just stagger next door for some dumpling therapy

bradbarian So it took moving back to Australia to make me miss the idea of Christmas. As much as I applaud the effort here to decorate and celebrate the spirit with traditional trimmings it's just not the same without some cold weather, snow (or even the possibility of snow) and the idea of cooking a huge turkey in a cozy kitchen and feeding all my friends on the day. With any luck I'll be working all through the holidays and I'll be too busy to really let Xmas be on my mind. Hard to do though when the malls and arcades are decorated so nicely. This is Royal Arcade again but I loved that view of the sky through the roof so I did that annoying IG thing where I held up traffic as I took the shot #royalarcade #sky #skylight #melbourne #melbourneisawesome #xmas #xmasdecorations #vanishingpoint 3w

bradbarian It's not often that I take photos with people featured prominently in the frame and even when I took this photo of the awesome graffiti art in a bar I didn't really notice the couple sitting right beneath. That may sound a bit disingenuous but I'd had a few wobbly-pops by then and out of about ten photos I took this was also the least blurry...so my focus was a bit 'altered' you might say.
Funny thing is that I can remember the song that was rolling through my brain just before I took this shot...(does that happen for anyone else?) So as a result every time I look at this I hear Linda Ronstadt singing "Different Drum" Oh don't get me wrong
It's not that I knock it
It's just that I am not in the market

bradbarian I surely do love this time of day. It seems to be made of warm honey and leaves a taste in your mouth of new kisses and old tears. It feels like the best part of a broken heart and the worst part of falling in love all at once and sometimes I want to cry and laugh and hug a stranger when I'm standing in its glow. I guess it's the primal instinct of fear and reverence combined with a modern understanding of time that comes to the surface for me at this hour of day...all I know for sure is that sunset is more romantic and touched with melancholy than sunrise and there's more promise in sharing the night than there is in sharing the day

bradbarian Let me tell you a little something about 'beautiful'. Beautiful is not defined by any one thing or even a million things. It's not the be all and end all of creation and it's not the ultimate compliment. It's a never ending, always uncertain, perfectly imperfect moment in time when your acceptance of a situation melds with your inability to define why it makes you so happy.
It's certainly not one look or one style, and it's not one person. It's so many people that you forget why you ever felt out of place or unable to relate in the first place. It's the understanding that beautiful happens regardless of whether we acknowledge it or not and it exists even when we are too insecure or self centred to notice it. Beautiful doesn't need your stamp of approval, it's just there, you only need to know that for it to make you happy. Notice the beautiful in any part of a day and that day will be the best day ever...that's beautiful

bradbarian So not a beach day today in Melbourne...heavy rain, some thunder and just generally a good time to stay in and do exactly what I'm doing. Surfing social media...
This photo is from a couple of weeks ago and it's hard to tell but it was not really a beach day then either. Lots of cold wind and occasional spots of rain but I managed to take this shot during one of the rare breaks in the cloud. Whatcha see ain't always what is.
I lost five dollars that day which amounts to breakfast for me lately. I reached into my pocket for my phone and the fiver peaked out and was immediately grabbed by the wind and blown into the water. There was an old guy right next to me when it happened and he looked at me to see my reaction, so I shrugged my shoulders and said "Looks like a day at the beach is worth five dollars" which got a laugh from him. Next thing you know, he and I and a bunch of other people were yelling at a couple of kite-surfers nearby and encouraging them to try and grab the floating fiver as they skimmed by. Little kids were screaming their heads off and groaning loudly when the guys missed. They still hadn't grabbed the money by the time I left but the crowd was still urging them on and as I walked away I figured that was some pretty cool entertainment for just five bucks

bradbarian Have I ever told you guys about my first bad experience with clowns?
I was just a kid, maybe four years old and my family were all at the Brisbane Exhibition, a kind of state fair. I was kind of a weenie as a kid, afraid of my own shadow and quiet (some would say awkward and painfully shy) so I was hesitant to try anything that my family was encouraging me to do, like go on the kiddie rides or pet the animals or really anything except cling to my Father's legs. I think it frustrated them a bit and by the time we got to the game where you put the ball in the rotating clown head I figured I'd better try something just to prove I could. So yeah, I took one of the wooden balls and shoved it into a rotating clown head's mouth and forgot to let the ball go. Big mistake.
The clown head took my arm and started turning it back and forth and like the monkey who wouldn't let go of the apple I went back and forth with it, becoming more panicked with each pass. So I screamed for help. Then my father screamed at me to let go which confused me because I thought the clown head was holding on to me! So then he picked me up and tried physically pulling me out of the clown's mouth whilst I screamed more and held onto the ball. Eventually just the pain of having my fingers crushed inside the clown's mouth forced the ball from my hand and I sprang free but my night at the fair was over.
So you can see how a little thing like having a clown almost break your arm as a child might effect how you feel about them as an adult...which means I'm not sure whether I'll be stepping into the giant clown mouth at Luna Park anytime soon...well, definitely not at night

bradbarian High cloud and overcast this morning, perfect for running the stairs beside Princes Bridge. I kept looking at this scene as I turned for the downstairs portion of the run and it looked so European at times that I felt like I could be in France or England.
It helps the fantasy that Jean Paul Gaultier's name is emblazoned on a huge red banner in the distance...I really ought to find out what that's all about

bradbarian I have this tendency to make emotional connections to places and things that keep me coming back to them. This laundromat that I used the first week in Melbourne is one of those places.
White Monkey Internet Cafe and Laundrette it's called...a semi scuzzy little dive with an espresso machine up front, some computer terminals in the anteroom and also a couple out beyond the decrepit sliding door that separates the smokers from the real people inside. Jammed in around the computer terminals you have industrial washing machines and in the back three of those giant front loading tumble dryers that heat your clothes so hot you can't touch them for a few minutes after they're dried.
I'm not painting a pretty picture am I?
The thing is, when I found this place it was raining and I almost turned around and walked away until I stepped through the sliding doors into the courtyard. It was as ramshackle as the rest with a multi-coloured corrugated plastic roof keeping most of the rain out but letting a few trickles in to keep you on your toes and to water the bamboo planted in a small garden. There were Balinese masks and flags and a couple of Buddha images tacked up on the walls looking down and it reminded me so much of South East Asia that I immediately fell in love with it and ached to be back there again. Nobody came through into the courtyard the whole time I sat and waited for both my washing and drying which suited me perfectly. I used one of the dry chairs and read my book, sipped excellent coffee and when my clothes were done the sun came out and lit up one of the walls with the Buddha images looking down on me. I couldn't have been happier in that moment if you paid me to be...and so I keep going back there once a week by train to do some laundry. Or at least that's what it looks like to everyone else

bradbarian Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of restaurants and pricey stores, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy wallet and thy credit cards they comfort me...
If you have any experience with Melbourne laneways you'll appreciate how true this bastardised version of Psalm 23:4 is. So many of the laneways are chockers with restaurant and cafe seating, little stores selling pricey crap, musicians busking for change and street urchins picking pockets for their gang leaders.
Ok, I made that last bit up but it COULD happen.
Every time I walk into one of these narrow places I'm overwhelmed by options...should I eat this or that or should I buy something from here or there? Inevitably I walk away empty handed and hungry but with at least a photo to show I'd been there

  •   aubreesweet That place is AWESOME!! I do the exact thing when I go to some new place all my life. Walk around & agonize over what to eat and end up eating nothing. bradbarian Now for a complete 180 on the laneways and alleys in Melbourne you can't go much farther than the arcade entrances to some of the shopping centres. This one is Royal Arcade off Bourke Street, all pimped up in her Xmas dress and looking like a million dollars. I'm not what you'd call a 'shopping' person (when I have money to spend I drink or eat or travel with it) but a pretty lady like this makes me wish I had a few extra bucks to blow.
Melbourne has some of the finest and most well preserved Victorian era architecture I've ever seen, it makes strolling through these shopping centres so much more appealing than the bland, generic mall experience that you get in most cities...not that there aren't any of those around here, I just don't take photos of them #royalarcade #bourkestreet #melbourne #melbourneisawesome #victorian #architecture #parquet #shopping

bradbarian Y'all know how much I loves me an alley, right? I love the grimy, piss-smelling, moss/mould damp, anything-could-happen vibe in an alley. Throw in some artwork and I'm happier than a pig in shizz.
Well Melbourne does alleys and lanes like nobody's business...if people ain't fuckin' or fightin' in 'em, they're paintin' or dinin' in 'em. Melbourne makes excellent use of both their street level and rooftop small spaces so get used to seeing some sweet-ass alleys from me for a while...and the occasional rooftop as well

bradbarian Just look at this awesome place. It's Lygon St Nursery, a little tiny storefront behind which is this narrow gem of an outside nursery. I literally took a big intake of breath and then let it out in a prolonged "Wooooooowwwww..." as I stepped into this beauty. I applied for a position there and barring any of the lovely staff losing their jobs I hope they call me. Melbourne parks and gardens are insanely lovely, especially to a plant freak like me. I'm forever touching plants and whispering sweet nothings to them. It makes for strange stares and people ushering their children away from me but that's ok...just more space for me and the fleurs

bradbarian Yes it's true...I haven't seen you much lately, and I want you to know it's not you...it's me.
I may have met someone else and she's got me so bewitched that I have a hard time remembering what came before her. She's much older than me so I'm spending a lot of time learning what makes her tick, but she's so young at heart that my energy flags before she's ready to sleep. You can see why that leaves little time for keeping touch.
Anyway, I thought it was time you should meet the new woman in my life...not that it's serious or anything! I might be in her now but there are a lot of other places I'd like to be in as well y'know. Gotta keep my options open.
So, IG this is Melbourne. My home for the foreseeable future or at least until my money and luck run out. I thought you should see the most iconic face of my new girl (since I didn't post one of these earlier in the year when we first met) so here's Flinders Street Station, the main hub for train and tram connections in the downtown core. A marriage of the old with the new...pretty much what Melbourne does best

bradbarian Her hair was truly magnificent. Brunette with highlights of red and wild in it's fullness even though it was always tied back at school. When she loosed it every afternoon as we walked home it would whip about and twist into long curls around her head as if it were waiting the whole day to be free. This would happen even on windless days and it would frame the feral beauty of her face like a tangled mane. If I'd had the words as a teenager I would have known how to tell her just how deeply sexual it made me feel to see this. Most times though, I would just hold her face in both my hands and kiss her hard, and then tell her that I loved her in that earnestly inadequate way of a high school boy

  •   jadenschmaiden Aubree got me turned in to Long Black Veil by New Riders of the Purple Sage, another great murder ballad - "there were few at the scene but they all agree that the slayer who ran looked an awful lot like me". And he let them hang him so he could keep the secret to protect his best friend (and his wife) even when he knew he was innocent. Wow. 3mon
  •   bradbarian @missvickie_ Yeah I guess Bambi doesn't need more punishment. Maybe he/she (?😐) could have a word with the other obnoxious ungulates. 3mon
  •   bradbarian @jadenschmaiden Well now I'm gonna be on YouTube all afternoon. I love the name of that band, it's so visual. 3mon
  •   jadenschmaiden They rule. Its the band that made Panama Red. I love LA Lady, Linda, One Too Many Stories and Kick In The Head. Great music all around. When we were little Aubree use to bring crude tapes of them to my house & we listened for hours on end. 3mon
