  •   alicesclifton When herpetologist Jay Savage discovered them in 1966, he said, "my initial response...was one of disbelief and suspicion that someone had dipped the examples in enamel paint" because they were so colorful and shiny. 1mon

  •   katereutersward A sea mink?! What?!! 1mon
  •   alicesclifton It was so much longer and bulkier than the American mink that its average pelt was almost twice as big. It was hunted to extinction to satisfy the European fur market before scientists could even study it. #ofcourse 1mon

bpgabrielli 009 - Caribbean Monk Seal (1952)
#the100dayproject #100daysofextinction
1mon
  •   alicesclifton Although the last confirmed sighting was in 1952, the U.S. didn't officially declare it extinct until 2008, after an exhaustive 5 year search (imagine!). Unconfirmed sightings of them still crop up around Haiti and Jamaica, but they are more likely of hooded seals (native to the NW Atlantic). 1mon
  •   lizmayleaf This one makes me sad 1mon

bpgabrielli 008 - Sloane's Urania (1908)
#the100dayproject #100daysofextinction
1mon
  •   alicesclifton Found in Jamaica, this butterfly's population would explode, consume its hosts plants, and migrate in big colorful swarms to a new patch of host plants--requiring large, intact areas of forest. It likely died out due to loss of a larval host plant (one of which was poisonous to most animals). 1mon

#the100dayproject #100daysofextinction
1mon
  •   alicesclifton Aw, these guys lived on the coast of San Francisco's Sunset District. Believed to be the first American butterfly to go extinct due to urban development. 1mon
  •   alicesclifton Perhaps cuter and sadder still: "Xerces probably associated with ants in its larval stage as part of a symbiotic relationship. One of the theories regarding the extinction of the species is that with human settlement in the Bay Area, new species of ant were introduced which slowly replaced the existing ant species within the butterfly's super habitat." (Wikipedia) 1mon

  •   alicesclifton While these were flightless birds, their wings were not useless. They reportedly flapped them quickly to make a rattling sound to attract mates, and while fighting they would hit each other with large bony knobs that had developed at their wrists. 2mon

  •   sainys_ Love your concept 2mon
  •   alicesclifton Even though the dodo was extinct by 1700, it wasn't recognized as such until the 1800s. "This was partly because, for religious reasons, extinction was not believed possible...and partly because many scientists doubted that the dodo had ever existed. It seemed altogether too strange a creature, and many believed it a myth." (Wikipedia) 2mon
  •   carlyayres This is so fantastic! 2mon

  •   stoneisamineral It looks like a wolf with a beard which makes me more intrigued 2mon
  •   ajaevans 2mon
  •   alicesclifton Poor things: "These wolves are well known, from Byron's account of their tameness and curiosity...The Gauchos, also, have frequently killed them in the evening, by holding out a piece of meat in one hand, and in the other a knife ready to stick them...in all probability this fox will be classed with the dodo, as an animal which has perished from the face of the earth." -Darwin 2mon

  •   alicesclifton "...one of only two marsupials to have a pouch in both sexes (the other being the water opossum). The male thylacine had a pouch that acted as a protective sheath, covering his external reproductive organs while he ran through thick brush." (Wikipedia) Makes sense! 2mon
  •   alicesclifton (Also I hope you don't mind my making a hobby out of looking up your extinct species and posting little tidbits I find interesting.) 2mon
