berrics A focus group is where a select group of people are asked to voice their perceptions, opinions, beliefs, and attitudes towards a specific product or topic. All opinions and beliefs are welcome. For today’s #BerricsFocusGroup, we’re digging into the all-new Avex team model for @supraskateboarding, the #SupraAvex. What are your thoughts? 18h

berrics If professional skateboarding were an institution of higher learning, Dr. @daewon1song would be our martial artist in residence. The top researcher in his field, Dr. Dae has taken pause from a deadly year of silently assassinating everything set before him—the manny-based video contest #2Up, and the opposite side of the metaphorical coin, the park-and-round-wall-based video contest #InTransition—not to mention his skating in @chaseingabor's Reverie video for #REDirectand the daily battle with skateboarding’s preconceptions that he uses to keep his skill set razor sharp. And as part of his residency program, the good doctor hopes to establish a creative and aggressive field of study that will keep students of all skateboarding disciplines following his killer-instincts for semesters to come.

berrics Odd man out on this list, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t deserving of the lion’s share of the popular vote.@choadped came on strong with his Welcome To @nikesb part early in 2014 and followed that up with an amazing segment for #InTransition that was filmed in three days at the Lincoln City Skatepark. Not one to slow down, Ben went on trip after trip, logging miles in backyard pools, skateparks, contests like the Van Doren Invitational at the Vans US Open of Surf and Diamond Halloween Hellride (in which he placed 1st), cutty DIYs, and just enough street chomping to let us all know he’s not one-dimensional [added hyphen]. At the end of it all, he blunted a monstrous construction wall at the Louisville Skatepark—all but locking the win for Birdhouse on Thrasher’s KOTR. Odd is good in Ben’s case.

berrics Skateboarding’s favorite wizard, @toreypudwill year was, as you’d expect, one filled with sorcery, eye of newt, and toe of frog. Wait. Wrong recipe. T-Puds’ magic comes not from a cauldron’s hell broth, but from his own wizardly movements … and wax. An underdog if ever there was one to root for, Torey’s brand of supernatural consistently lifted him from of the depths of some instant scoring dungeons, to the steps of more than one @streetleague podium. In fact, he placed 3rd overall for the 2014 SLS season. Add in a full Supernova part for @dvsshoes, a new pro shoe, a full line of gear from @grizzlygriptape, and tons of tour footy to round it out for good measure. And as if that weren’t enough, he slid for blocks, grinded shoulder height, and flipped in and out straight into the last part in 2014’s heaviest video, @planbofficial TRUE. Can’t wait to see what he’s got under his wizard hat for ’15.

berrics Putting down brawny roots, @luanomatriz 2014 was another eventful one. He put out a crispy #StrikeAndDestroy part for @NikeSB, won a silver medal at @XGames in Austin, killed it at Tampa Pro, placed 2nd overall for the 2014 @StreetLeague season, impeccably popped his flatground for #BATB7—in which he placed 2nd overall—and scored a Street League People’s Choice Award (for which, Luan gets to design the course for the first stop of this year’s SLS). There's no denying that this spontaneous and sure-footed Brazilian is one of skateboarding’s all-time best. But you get the feeling that come hell or high water, polished arena or crusty southern-hemisphere curbside, Luan’s year of thriving and surviving is nothing but an opening act for his onslaught of the coming decade. And don't forget his Instagrams either. Luan and his fancy footwork are truly pushing the boundaries of skateboarding.

berrics If you speak with anyone who knew @Guymariano as a young skater, they’ll tell you that he was constantly progressing and inspiring others to progress. His legacy of skate clips is commemorated in @colinmkennedy #LifeOnVideo series, and he’s refreshingly open about his appreciation for skateboarding and his place in its history. Guy’s career is a testament to how unbelievably difficult it is for a passionate skater to pull back from the scene for any length of time; in the long run, the raw, complex feeling of skating and learning is just too powerful to ignore. Life On Video culminates in part 5 with an edit that may be his strongest work to date — if you’re not counting his ridiculously insane Bangin' or the mind-blowing NBDs he casually releases on Instagram. You just can’t keep a good Guy down.

berrics In 2014, something happened to @Louielo. He was no longer a little kid anymore, but a fuckin’ man! For a guy we all watched grow up on video, it can be tough to forget that kid image after his braces, beanie, and long hair were first seared into memory during Extremely Sorry. It happened, though. Louie finally reached his fighting weight, and skateboarding’s collective consciousness knows it. If his part in @Flipskateboardsvideo 3 is any indication—fast, cruise-y, and chock-full of grown-ass-man hammers—we’re stoked on the big Louie. And don’t forget about his solid #Goosenectarpart that he shared with friend and teammate,@alecmajerus, his super smooth 3rd place #RAG2014run, his King of the Road footage, his clips in the @Converse_Cons Perros y Amigos tour edit, his 3rd place @DewTour Street performance, and of course, all the other random footage he put out in The Berrics. Goddamn, that's a heavy year.

berrics To say 2014 was a good year for #WesKremer is downplaying it just a little bit. He kicked the year off with a cover and interview for @TheSkateboardMagissue #121, and from Lite in Latin America to the Defy Convention Asia Tour, he was the de facto MVP on every @DCshoes trip he went on. He released two amazing video parts that hit so hard the sound of thunder was heard around the world. First there was Crusty By Nature that showcased the shredding that this San Diego kid is capable of on all type of terrain; mixing 90s bank-to-ledge technical wizardry, just the right tranny moves, unparalleled gap dominance, and rail enders that had to be watched over and over. Then in November, another Wes part surfaced (shared with Tyler Surrey) called Pack Of Hydes that continued the hype of Crusty and helped to earn him Thrasher SOTY 2014. Oh, he also managed a silver medal in @XGamesReal Street, in case you didn’t know.

berrics Year after year, @nyjah_huston continues his steamrolling dominance on a skateboard. 2014 was no exception. He built his own skatepark, harnessed his skills even further, and shut down every major contest this year. He won Tampa Pro, took @xgames Street gold in Austin (while also setting the record for most gold medals in X-Games Skateboard Street history), and then there’s @streetleague - Street League. Can you say, “flawless victory”? Yup, that’s what an undefeated season (and highest score of the year) looks like. In the streets, he shut down seriously gnarly rails and gaps like nothin’, which his Thrasher King of the Road awards for Best Handrail Trick and Gnarliest Handrail will attest to. Taking a close look at his Bangin’ on The Berrics earlier this year, with the new menu of tricks he was working on, it’s no surprise that he dominated. He made his cake and ate it, too. And that rowdy 20th birthday celebration of his … icing on the cake.

berrics It’s a wonder that @fgustavoo can sleep at night. The level of technical perfection he requires of himself would give most people insomnia. Yet he possesses the precision to roll away from the most technical moves of 2014, not just once, but lines’ worth … whole video parts’ worth. In his first place winning #RAG2014(making him 2 for 2 for R&G as a whole), he packed ten tricks in a 60 second run, most of which were flip in, switch, or nollie. His @planbofficial TRUE part definitely qualified him as the tech rep of the crew, and did a mighty fine job to quench the thirst of ledge connoisseurs worldwide. And on the opposite end of the spectrum, he won his way into @streetleague at the SLS Pro Open, made Finals in just about every major contest circuit, and filmed countless segments on The Berrics. It’s been a good year, Felipe, rest assured.

berrics It can be hard for a rookie pro to prove himself, but @trevorcolden rose to the occasion this year. With a wildly impressive welcome to @skatemental part—and a @heyfilmthis-directed video filmed for the inaugural #REDirect project that was not only seen by every skater on the planet but also broke through to a wider mainstream audience—he worked hard and quickly lost that “rookie” label. And if his video parts and cover/interview for @theskateboardmag 129 weren’t enough, he also won his way into the @streetleague circuit at the SLS Pro Open, won the Run & Gun 2014 Best Trick Award with a mid-run halfcab crook 180, and last but not least, took silver in @dewtourStreet and gold in Dew Tour Streetstyle in the very same weekend in Brooklyn. Multiply all that with a healthy serving of footage filmed in The Berrics and you're looking at an extremely solid year. Considering that Trevor famously bought himself out of his contract to ride for Skate Mental (baller moves), we definitely have a legend in the making.
