augustnetta Well we know where we're going
But we don't know where we've been
And we know what we're knowing
But we can't say what we've seen
And we're not little children
And we know what we want
And the future is certain
Give us time to work it out

We're on a road to nowhere
Come on inside
Taking that ride to nowhere
We'll take that ride Talking Heads

augustnetta For my oldest and dearest friend, who is slowly dying of alcoholism.
When your nickname rang it sang from my mouth, echoing in our English boarding school where you made the grass green and the food palatable. I loved your gold vessel pendant hanging high on your breast plate, fragile clavicle bones sheltering your aquarian justice. My mother called you nutmeg because of your fragrance; and you were adored. A chosen sister.
Now my mother opens every window in the small box where we find you, the stench of a body decaying too much to bear. When we hear your voice it's the diseases voice, full of lies and self harm. Your son looks at you and we look at your son. Social services have called again, and there is nothing more we can do.
Everything my darling nutmeg, we have tried to do for you but the murderer has her hands around your neck and is squeezing squeezing. Everything is being taken from you, leaves falling and scattering and the last wind will take your breath. I'm scared and sleepless my chosen sister, but you're not here anymore, you've already gone.
There was a moment where it could have turned; the last moment, and then the last again, as we all surrounded you and tried to carry you and now the whole history of our love is rolled in one single tear drop that floods the land of my memory.

My darling chosen sister, forever I will sing your name in peace. If you can hear me, please come back.

  •   augustnetta @cherryshine_ thanks so much for your so thoughtful note 1w
  •   kbasta this has moved me (almost to tears)... such a sad & beautiful testament this is, to her, to your friendship, to the loss. I'm so sorry you are going through this, and send an irrational hope that she can break free of the murderer's grip.  1w
  •   radicaljill @augustnetta you're so welcome Annette. Thank you for sharing and listening to me. It was one of those things that completely changed me as a person all the way through. I don't talk about it very much but I still think about him almost every day. I hope the best for your friend. The one thing I really regretted after my friend passed was that I didn't hug him more. Hugs to you Annette 5d

augustnetta The truth is that the only time I'm happy is when I'm doing absolutely nothing. I don't understand people who like to work and talk about it like it was some sort of goddamn duty. Doing nothing felt like floating on warm water to me. Delightful, perfect. Ava Gardner #vietnam 2w

augustnetta Causeway Bay today in HK. Protestors thin on the ground there compared to recent days, but my first opportunity to go and see what is happening (I live on the South Side of the island). Proud of the HK people for being amazing and at the same time frightened by my memories of watching live coverage (before they shut down the media) of the first bloody moments of Tiananmen Square. I'm having many conflicting thoughts, ideas, conversations, and am reading articles to educate myself and establish my viewpoint on this crucial crossroads in HK's history. One really important article I read was about the rivalries and factions in the politburo in Beijing using HK as a pawn to discredit president Xi and stop his "anti-corruption" stance which effectively has removed rivals and consolidated Xi's power. What is HK's future now? I don't know. I'm still thinking, and no doubt will continue to learn more as I reconnect with my hometown. Meanwhile Max's school has been cancelled the whole week because of the protests closing roads, so between entertaining kids and unpacking please forgive me if I don't respond in a timely way. Thinking of you all with love as always ️ Netta 4mon
  •   lafletcher Hope it all turns out for the best. That reporter looks familiar. 4mon
  •   suzanz It must be amazing to be in HK now. Great respect for the protesters for remaining peaceful; hope it stays that way. It does sound so complex. Thinking of you and your family. Stay safe. 4mon
  •   consideredlight Interesting time to be there. Be careful 4mon

Max was off school for a month because of protests and also holidays so it was tricky but now he's back since last Monday and I have time to get things organised. How are you? All love 3mon
  •   elnon66 Definitely interesting stage in the future of HK! 3mon

augustnetta But the question that everyone wanted answered was whether I would have the nerve and the strength to start the whole process from scratch. I said yes; otherwise I would be someone who had no dream left, and without dreams I would not want to live. Werner Herzog ••• In an ironic twist of fate, our belongings from New York finally arrived the morning of our weekend trip to DC for a family wedding ... it's going to be a bit mad at when we return; sadly, I am not a minimalist. Have a beauty of a weekend all 5mon
  •   lafletcher No I can't imagine you being a minimalist. Me on the other hand I'm trying to be one more and more each move... Last move all my CD's stayed in tubs. This move all my books are still boxed up except for a few select photography books, a book of Rumi poems, a novel that I have stopped and started about 4 times now, and my kindle... There is comfort in being surrounded by your "stuff", but I love the feeling of being able to pick up and go as quickly as possible - everything in one bag. I'm still far from there though. Enjoy your weekend 5mon

augustnetta Meanwhile it's got stormy, the tattered fog even thicker, chasing across my path. Three people are sitting in a glassy tourist cafe between clouds and clouds, protected by glass from all sides. Since I don't see any waiters, it crosses my mind that corpses have been sitting there for weeks, statuesque. All this time the cafe has been unattended, for sure. Just how long have they been sitting here, petrified like this? Werner Herzog 5mon

augustnetta Being back in Hong Kong has connected me with my roots in the English education system. Although I've not a drop of English blood, all my formative years were spent being educated by the English culture, living in Hong Kong and then boarding school and further schooling in England. It's very weird being back, because I've spent the last 12 years in the states ... One of the experiences that resonates right now are the English nursery rhymes that I hear at Talia's Monday play group. I sing them to her, and it's uncanny, it's home from a distance because I still don't know the nursery rhymes, but it's all so English! And that's home to me ... What a surprise. Home is one of the more elusive concepts in my life ... I'm enjoying this uncomfortable feeling of comfort :) thanks for listening friends, be well xo 5mon
  •   augustnetta @_calipso_ thanks M, hopefully some happy new ones too 5mon
  •   augustnetta @picobogue home is so unreal, but one of the most real and tangible realities we possess. Where does home live? In shared memories? In the walls? In photo albums? With your beloved ... Home is different for all xo 5mon
  •   augustnetta @niovy thanks love, sometimes I can't help myself it all spills out but at least people that I care about can relate :) sending my love xoxoxo 5mon
  •   augustnetta @kareni thanks dearest, an unexpected share 5mon
  •   augustnetta @suzanz yes and some that I paid money to forget !!! Such is life! Lots of good happy memories to build and experience now 5mon
  •   augustnetta @caticolux always appreciate your special comments Poetess 5mon
  •   augustnetta @cirkeline a whole world looked over and in every corner and it was found in people and smells and snatches of song and food and sayings and accents, and family and then goodbyes and the familiarity of airplanes and airports, the smell of luggages of suitcases of a certain brand of tea, and old photo of a pair of shoes once so dear that had died, rice cookers and books and phone calls and always searching searching searching and never full, always room for more. 5mon
