ashleyw00d If you're not into long Ashley rants, stop reading now 🏼 There's nothing particularly earth shattering about these photos, but they were sweetly sent to me by a fellow competitor I met at the Heartland Classic & I happen to like them! (Yes, contrary to the stereotypes associated with competitive events, most of the girls I compete against become good friends of mine ) But, that's not the focus of my rant. Rather, I've come to realize over the past few months that mediocrity is the one thing in this world I fear more than anything. Simply feeling content has never been a comfortable position for me; in fact, it makes me incredibly anxious. Annnnd as uncomfortable as it is to admit, I found myself feeling nothing short of mediocre after this particular show. Fortunately, it only took me approximately 12 hours to talk myself out of believing that. Competing is one of the most emotionally taxing, yet intrinsically satisfying things I have ever decided to do. I love the 5:30 am grind, I love the squat sessions that sometimes make me want to puke, I love the feeling of personal achievement when I both expectedly and unexpectedly blow a previous PR of mine out of the water, and I love the self-discipline I must exert every single day. But more than anything, it's important for me to remember to unapologetically love myself. When you compete for the right reasons, the hardware you bring home is nothing more than the cherry on top. I am healthy, I am confident, and I am happy. I woke up the day after the Heartland Classic knowing I had initially planned to begin my improvement season; however, I promptly texted @jk_trout at about 7:30 am (oops) telling him I wanted to hit the stage one more time. ashleyw00d 3. Days. Out. I've been riding this prep train for a little under 16 weeks now & am beyond ecstatic to get on stage. Don't get me wrong, the struggle is real. Yes - I'm hungry, I'm fatigued, & I sometimes wonder how I'm supposed to make it through my next workout. BUT, I did it. I did it 100% naturally & with ZERO food restrictions. Transitioning from being a cardio bunny & "clean eater" --> lifting heavy shit & flexible dieting means I am able to eat according to my goals while still incorporating foods I love. Seriously, I eat some form of pancakes daily. And peanut butter, bacon, french toast, & all things cheesy. That being said, I also eat chicken, broccoli, huge salads, oatmeal, egg whites, and other nutrient dense foods that are essential for your overall health & wellbeing. I didn't crash diet, I didn't cut food groups, I didn't avoid artificial sweeteners, and I sure as hell wasn't given some cookie cutter meal plan. This is a lifestyle. Therefore, my eating habits need to be sustainable & they need to be balanced. There are a handful of lessons I've learned throughout my first prepping experience that I would love to share (let's be real, I will eventually...), but in the meantime, I'm excited to hit the stage this Saturday in Des Moines as well as on May 23rd in Omaha. ashleyw00d All animal print everythang. Rawr. In all seriousness, here's a quick update for those who are curious: prep is freaking hard. I'm 4 weeks out from my 1st show and 6 weeks out from my 2nd show. My energy level is low & my hunger level is high. It's all a mental game some days. The amount of "self pep talks" I give myself is ridiculous, but they're working. I refuse to allow myself to experience self-doubt, I refuse to compare my physique to someone else's, and I refuse to compete for the wrong reasons. My health, my happiness, my journey. ashleyw00d Guys, look! I DO know how to smile Sitting at 6 weeks out & embracing prep one day at a time. The physical changes have been small, but the mental changes have been HUGE. I could pick this picture apart, but I choose to appreciate every bit of it. Yes, I wish my quads were bigger, my shoulders were rounder, and my hamstrings were more defined. But I love how my strength has nearly doubled over the past year, my self-worth is not based on the presence of abs, & my confidence is a by-product of the time & energy I've invested in myself, not based on the opinions of others.
