arloft That moment when you're trying to be all clean and organized and it all goes sideways. Hahaha

Been away recently and not able to update much. Working on a couple commission projects and doing end of year tax prep (yaaaaay 🙄). Hope to find time to get back on some of my own stuff soon.

  •   voodoo1913 Smooth on there is no such thing as clean! I always make a mess no matter how careful I am lol 1w
  •   cutenotkawaii @voodoo1913 agreed! I lay down plastic tarp or crappy tablecloths when pouring molds. The mess just goes right in the garbage. 1w
  •   arloft @voodoo1913 @cutenotkawaii Haha, a mess is a little unusual for me, I keep it all fairly controlled. Today though, nah, the crappy overflow skirt (the white paper at the top of the mold) wasn't sealed and I forgot about that when I started pouring, so it leaked out of the cracks. I plugged the big leaks with the yellow clay but by then it was a big mess. ... A tip for covering your workspace, I use waxed paper that's masking taped down onto a cutting mat. The waxed paper can last for multiple sessions depending how messy you get. Worst case you toss it at the end. Isopropyl alcohol will dissolve liquid resin & dye/tint, and mineral spirits will dissolve liquid silicone (but not vice-versa). When I spill either, I use the specified solution to clean it. The little tub of blue liquid in the photo is mineral spirits that's polluted with liquified silicone. When you let the spirits sit long enough, the silicone sludge settles to the bottom of the jar. I also filter both my mineral spirits and isopropyl alcohol with old 4-cup coffee pots & filters, then pour it back into its container, I reuse everything! 1w

arloft This has the potential to be so awesome. Regardless how the author designs the aesthetic, it all comes down to the story, character relationships, and the dialogue. Not that Star Wars has particularly amazing dialogue, but the characters and their pursuits are relatable enough to the viewer where they just get sucked into the world. I don't know much about Yohancé, or even African lore, but the little I do, mixed with futurism and science fiction poises this to be amazing. Now, if they can just not mess it up.

arloft Finally set aside a little time today to try fixing up this torso mold. It's been sitting on the bench while I've worked on commission stuff.
What I'm doing here is creating new vent parts. The torso's shoulder peg wasn't venting quite right because of the small air pocket that forms between the peg's concentric rings. The resin will fill these rectangular vent gates and force out any remaining air. It's less elegant than one thin rod on each peg, but should work better and, once trimmed, won't be noticeable on an assemble figure.
Using Rebound 25 to fill the previous holes; will just have to cut through it later to re-separate the halves. You may also notice the clamps around the mold, clamps have made a big difference in cast quality vs. rubber bands or tape. Additional benefit is less waste generated and a more secure mold (less leaking). #resincasting #resintoys #resinart #moldmaking #fix #molddesign #motu #vintage #heman #arttoys #artist #repair #progess #process

arloft I've been toiling on a commission for the last few weeks, having hinted at it a bit, but can't show anything specific. It's almost ready to ship out so hopefully I can show it soon.

What I can say about it, is that I've leveled up again. Learned more about casting small parts and the difficulties you may encounter. Despite those troubles, I've also learned how to get good casts of these small parts, consistently, which is important for anything more than a one-off. I should be able to share more soon, and show the process on future projects of my own.

arloft So, the last mold box I posted, there was a huge problem, well, two problems. 1) the box and mold space were *way* too big, I used an entire 32 oz "trial size" set of translucent silicone (see through!), which is a huge amount for one mold. 2) the container I used to degas it was too small and the silicone had a lot more air bubbles than I recall other batches having.
So, it expanded to 4x its size and overflowed into the pot. Made a huge mess (I'll post a photo). I couldn't get it out of the container so I had to trash both the now-useless silicone and the plastic container. I was feeling both furious and incredibly stupid. Wasted money, time, and material.

But I carry on. This is a new, smaller, more efficient mold design (still can't fully show it, sorry). I broke apart the gate structure, moved the parts closer together, and redesigned the vents. I think this one will work as well and require half as much silicone (based on my calculations). Commissions typically aren't where you want to hit new obstacles, lose time, and have to learn new ways to approach issues, but the lessons are very valuable regardless where you learn them.

arloft Vague preview of secret project. Can't show the actual thing, that's classified, haha. It's a commission, so the owner will show it when they're ready.

Trying hard to reduce my silicone usage. Need to remember I can use a parent mold or other things to reinforce it when casting, the silicone doesn't have to make up the entire mold, just the important part.

  •   arloft @8bitmike Haha, a little. It's definitely oddly shaped. Trying something a little new. The parts in molding won't allow a smaller layout, so I'm doing what I can to cut down on how much silicone I need without compromising the mold integrity. 4mon

arloft After many trials and two different molds, I've finally pulled a near perfect cast of this torso. This pic shows the evolution of the torso casts, with the bottom right being the latest one where the shoulder peg came out complete.

I've made some ugly hacks to the mold to get here, but I think they're mostly fixable and shouldn't require a new mold. The issue was with air being pulled down into the vent holes, I guess, in the pressure pot. The way I fixed it was building reservoir areas above the vent openings and pumping in more resin that usual, and extra 5 or 6 mL. I squeezed the mold a few times after filling to try forcing trapped air up and out of the vents until I didn't see any more big bubbles trying to escape. Seems to have worked. I'll post a more detailed pic of the cast halves. It's pretty exciting to have finally cracked this problem, it was really stressing me out and making me doubt my ability to cast complex pieces like this.

  •   otorres54 Awesome its a pain i go through it as well. 4mon
  •   labmonkeynumber9 What I like to do is squeeze the mold a little, making the bubbles come up, then I shoot resin in with a syringe just as I let up on the squeezing. I also do the over flow thing so the pressure pot has a pool of resin to draw from. 2mon

arloft First test cast from the torso re-mold. So many different problems. Foremost is a weird bubbled surface on the cast, there are air pockets trapped under the surface (not air bubbles like you'd expect), like blisters, they're soft and you can push them around under the surface. Only thing I can assume is too much mold release sprayed on; maybe it pooled, or maybe didn't dry thoroughly before I cast. Not sure.
The cast itself must have still not fully cured after 2 hours (says 30 minute cure time on the paper). The part was still soft and very brittle, it broke apart and pegs broke off just pulling it from the mold. Never had that happen before. Also, obviously there's a huge air pocket on the right half of the torso front. I'll have to revisit that area and see what I can do. It's likely not tall enough above the shoulder peg, and there isn't adequate venting, or something. Another odd thing was the dye didn't fully mix into the resin (part B). It usually mixes completely but this time it sort of beaded and only partially mixed. Could be a factor to the cure time and brittleness but unlikely.

Failures are hurdles on the path to success. Can't stop just because something went wrong. I'll first try to fix that vent problem then make another cast to test it. Overall, the venting seemed better while casting, I'm thinking excessive mold release may be the culprit.

arloft Defects, defects. After the silicone had settled (post pour & second degassing) apparently there *still* wasn't enough. After the mold had fully cured, I could see a few millimeters of the shoulder peg sticking out of the top of the mold Used an old leftover piece of Rebound from a mixing cup and cut out a hole. Mixed up more Rebound, painted some on the bottom of the fixing ring (to act like a glue), and pressed it on, surrounding the defect. I placed the vent rod back in, then filled the ring with the rest of the Rebound silicone. Cut it fairly close to the original cut line, and it seems to have bonded pretty well with the MoldStar (as the mold boxes seals do). Seems to be an OK fix, will know for sure when I make a cast.

This kind of points to the importance of precision and double checking all your numbers before mixing up material. If this fix doesn't work (deformed casts), then I'll have to probably retire at least half the mold (I'd try to salvage the other half) and remold this part. My math was off when I calculated the mass and volume of the box minus the volume taken up by the parts and scrap silicone filler. I've been trying to get more precise to reduce how much silicone I waste or trash. This stuff isn't that cheap and I've used a lot so far. Managing your material usage and costs is important to keeping this hobby affordable.

arloft While not exciting to look at, I finally got this version 2 of the 5.5" torso mold poured after a long delay. Miscalculated the amount of silicone I needed by 1/4, so had to rush measuring, mixing, vacuum degassing, and pouring a second batch of silicone into the mold before the rest started to cure. Then tossed the mold into the vac chamber to suck out as much air as possible from all the little crevices and cavities on the back side of the torso halves. Left it in there for like 4-5 minutes so, fingers crossed.

Hoping all the tape I added helps me cut into the mold with better precision than last time. Switching to Smooth-On's Sorta-Clear platinum silicone on the next mold. Being see through should make cutting parts out a LOT easier. Or so I would hope. Also need to work on making smaller molds that use less material. One step at a time.

  •   peanutbuttermeister So you do one pour, then cut it into a two-piece mold? Is the tape just there to guide the cut, or does it have another purpose? 4mon
  •   arloft @peanutbuttermeister Yea, I pour it as one piece then cut it open, but fully into two pieces. Leave one side uncut to act as a hinge and to help the sides realign when closed. The tape is a guide, to help me find the edges of the parts. This is only the 3rd mold I've done that's 1 piece. All my previous molds were two parts. 4mon
  •   peanutbuttermeister @arloft cool, thanks. Still trying to get the hang of one-piece molds. Your posts are great, very helpful to see other people's approaches 4mon

arloft Unrelated to toy stuff, but the old designer in me still loves things like this. Technical drawings like exploded diagrams are so cool, I love the detail and intricacy of the drawings and clear layout to communicate the parts place and function within the machine. This one is for a HeatMate kerosene heater I bought this week, and it's in the middle of the instruction manual.

arloft The videos have been coming along but not without issues, sound cut off, batteries dying, all the things that could make it more difficult than it should be.

New mold is ready for silicone. Wanted to video this part (been recording as much of the process as I can) but the battery died earlier than expected, so some footage was lost. Added a bit more tape this time, hopefully it'll make it finding the part later in the silicone less messy (less cuts where I don't want them). While making the videos has been a bit troublesome, I'll be excited to get them up for you to see.
