arloft Holy crap guys!! Pulled a near-perfect cast from my latest mold!
Had some struggles cutting open the mold (haven't done many one piece molds) but think I'll get better at it as I do more.
Did the usual syringe injection, and added drink stir straws into the two vents, seemed to help let the resin flow higher than than the top of the mold, further reducing trapped air. I tried to pull it out a bit too early (overexcited), and distorted the neck/collar on the front half of the cast but it shouldn't happen again. Turned out slightly translucent, probably need to use an opaque resin. I'll try for very transparent next time.

arloft A shot of the mold being degassed a second time inside the pressure tank. I used some @smoothon #MoldStar 15 to make a new seal ring (light teal band at bottom left), the included one in Harbor Freight's paint pot is meh and I'm pretty sure it leaks. This rubber is a lot softer and makes a tighter seal. Should help when pressure casting too. 🏼 #molddesign #moldmaking #vacuum #degassing #silicone #smoothon #modifications #tools #levelup #silicone #process 2w

arloft It's been way too long since my last project post. Doing a little collage photo action here. Finally mixed up the silicone and poured the mold. My high tech dry-rice-as-a-volume-estimator was off a bit, I'll need to mix up a bit more and add it to the top. You can see in the inset photo where the part is sticking out of the top of the mold. Minor fix.

So overall, the revised process went ok (we'll see for real when I crack it open). You can see in the photo where there's some masking tape on the inner side, @resinvacuumcasting suggested this as a way to find a couple cutting points on a one part mold. I mixed and degassed the silicone as normal before pouring, but this mold has lots of little pockets so I degassed the silicone a second time once it had been poured. Seemed to work ok. Used an X-Acto to pop a lot of the leftover surface bubbles. I spent almost an entire @smoothon trial size of MoldStar 30, so hoping this mold works better than my previous ones. Work's been ramping up for me so I'll do my best to make regular updates on this.

arloft There's a lot going on here. It'll be a one part mold, and I took a suggestion from @resinvacuumcasting to run a couple pieces of tape from the edge of the part out to the side of the mold box. The tape will give you an indicator where to start cutting into the mold. The paper collar thing is there because I'll be degassing the silicone twice, once after mixing, and again when it's in the mold (remove any air trapped during the pour). It'll rise up like a fondue and this just reduces chances of spillage into the pot. Waiting on another thing before I can pour the silicone but I hope to get that done later today.

arloft Took an extra day to get the mold box done. Built an unusual shape to both reduce the overall size of the mold and reduce silicone usage, and so it would fit into the vac chamber (diameter, I'm limited to 9" across or less). While it's a bit slower, I'm liking using Rebound 25 to seal all the mold box edges. Doesn't require much to do the sealing and it sets up quickly. Full cure time is 6 hours but you can really just wait an hour or so (it has a 20 minute pot life) then start mixing / degassing the silicone. I'll be using a few cut blocks of old silicone to secure the part's position in the box and also to cut down silicone usage. Expect a silicone pour update later today. #igtoyboys

  •   8bitmike is it going to be an exact Mer-man, or are you adding any personal customizations? 4w
  •   arloft @8bitmike Going to use casts of him as a base for personal customizations, I have a list of pop culture play on words character names I'd like to make into short run art toys. arloft Back at it (ugh, finally). "Sketch" of this mold, checking for the optimal placement. The plastic sprue / runners build is much nicer, so flexible compared to the wires in clay I was doing before.
Side note, I can use my pressure pot as a taller vacuum chamber. That will allow me to make a mold like this, degas the silicone after mixing, pour into this mold, then degas again to ensure no air is trapped. I'll post pics of the first trial run, hopefully tomorrow.

arloft I'm so slow :( but this method to build the gates / vents assembly is coming along. New workflows require new tools and sometimes experimentation to see what works best. Polystyrene rods heated with a lighter so I can bend them and/or crimp the ends into contact points. Bond them to each other and to the parts with Plastic Weld and Zip-A-Gap + Zip Kicker. Working great so far. The best part of this is that when done, it's all one piece, nothing moving or separating when pouring part 2 of the mold, or other tedium of the bent wire method I used before now. Debating on doing a two part mold again or trying something new and going one part. I'll post more updates before making that decision.

  •   arloft @8bitmike Thanks! I like sharing them! 1mon
  •   retrosalvager @arloft Do you feel like resin is being wasted from the vent / gate tubes? Or are the tubes giving u cleaner pulls so worth the loss of resin in vent tubes? 1mon
  •   arloft @retrosalvager Some resin will be lost no matter what, even just in the pour sprue. These pieces are hollow so the resin loss is a calculated cost to cast them as one mold rather than as a series of separate molds. The gates / vents should, ideally, help get cleaner pulls by allowing the air to easily escape. Though, I'm still learning how to best optimize the gate / vent layout so I guess we'll see when I start pulling casts from this mold. Fingers crossed! 1mon
  •   johncantslowdown If you're still going to articulate with peg arms there's really 0 reason to crack the torso... You also don't need all those silly candy canes attached as vents... Just pour it from the neck like ur pouring a pint... Sent you a DM, let's get ur work on par for the #moldanddestroy you're using! Good times!! 1mon

  •   arloft @johncantslowdown Thanks man! You're right that I could be using a simpler approach. This mold will have the pelvis halves on it too, they're just not connected yet. I get what you're saying about doing the torso as one piece. My aims here are to learn how to cast small and hollow parts as well as larger parts. I've got a few projects planned beyond toys to stuff like SNES controller and Gameboy bodies, stuff that just can't be cast as a single piece. The other thing I consider is cost, resin isn't cheap and hollow parts use less materials, plus I like the engineering challenge! 1mon

  •   arloft @8bitmike That's pretty good for a chain. I'll definitely try them. 1mon
  •   resinvacuumcasting Assembly is perfectly good name for it @arloft @lifeisterrible_toys it's the arrangement of the sprue, runners and gates used to direct the resin into the mould cavities. The sprue is the first big hole, runners are the interconnecting passages/tubes and the gates are the actual confections on the part cavity. All injection moulding terms. 1mon
  •   resinvacuumcasting If I could get hold of a similar base toy Aaron I would set one up as an example for you and anyone interested. Is there likely to be something like it at toysrus? That's about all we have here, or point me at somewhere on the net I could get one? I'm a complete toy noob 1mon
  •   arloft @resinvacuumcasting You could pick up any older articulated action figure whether at a Toysrus or even a thrift store. Split the torso open with a bench vise by putting it in perpendicular to the glue seam and crank til you hear the crack (but not til it breaks), then pry it apart the rest of the way with a screwdriver or similar. You may end up with an uneven seam or glue that won't give, and some repair or sawing may be necessary to get the halves apart. I had to replace broken pegs, drill out filled peg holes, and rebuild a couple uneven edges. 1mon
  •   arloft @resinvacuumcasting have you seen my latest posts? I'm taking a different approach, may try eliminating the clay phase and going straight to silicone. I'll likely also do the taped edges thing you do, can't hurt, right? :) 1mon
  •   resinvacuumcasting Sorry Aaron, had my head stuck in my own project so missed your last post. I'll have a look round to find a figure to mould, thanks for the advise. As long as you are familiar with your mould layout and take some tape out to the side of the box, you should be fine. Sometimes you gotta just get on and try new things out @arloft 1mon

arloft Been away from the desk for a while, but I'm back and working on something new. This is phase 1 for a series of pieces I want to do, all built on the 5.5" form factor. Building up the clay for part 1 of the mold. This is the slooooooowest part, but so important to get right. Any tips on speeding up building the clay positive? Chunking out clay and only filling in around the edges helps me move a bit faster, but finding the best parting line and getting those edges sealed is still a detailed process.

  •   arloft @resinvacuumcasting I can see the tape working where there's an edge to stick it to, but what about parts where the split line goes along a smooth surface, or a part where there's a small hard to reach area like on my last mold? I wouldn't want the tape to become part of the mold details. I can see it working on parts like this but not sure about small parts like my last mold. .. Side note, I'm thinking of pulling these parts out of the clay and building the gate system by gluing the gates to the parts. In the book "Pop Sculpture" they use wax rods for the gates, which is like to try. There's a jeweler supply store near me that should carry them. 2mon
  •   arloft My last mold, the gates were set into the clay and were too fragile when pulling the clay off once silicone side A was cured. Gluing the gates to the parts would likely prevent it from breaking apart before I'm ready to do it. @resinvacuumcasting 2mon
  •   resinvacuumcasting The way to deal with a smooth surface at the part line is to draw a line on your model, which you can then see as you cut open the mould and can follow. Small details don't matter, as long as the cut is across them they will be reproduced. As to gates I would use strips of sheet plastic (I use styrene) 3mm thick most of the time. That way your whole assembly is strong and can be handled. I don't know how jeweller's wax would be made to stick to your parts as like a rod of release agent! With flat stuff you can set it up nicely @arlfot 2mon
  •   arloft @resinvacuumcasting I do have some polystyrene rods of various lengths. That's what I was thinking I'd use, I came bend / form it with a heat gun, then super glue it to the part. I definitely need to be making study assemblies. My silicone isn't transparent, so not sure how I'd use lines on the part to guide me. I need to look into transparent platinum silicones versus the SmoothOn products in use now. I also have plenty of polystyrene sheets of different thicknesses, so I can use that if the rods don't work out. - ps, I learned recently you can tap & hold on a username and it will automatically appear in the comment box, no more typos! 2mon
  •   resinvacuumcasting I would use the sheet not the rods Aaron, much easier to work with. You can use opaque silicone, it's just a little more tricky@arloft 2mon
  •   arloft @resinvacuumcasting Yea, I think I'll use the sheets, just easier to work with in general. 2mon
  •   hemlock_bootlegs is the torso in the pic a cracked shell or a solid piece? @arloft 2mon
  •   arloft @hemlock_bootlegs It's a shell. I'm going to scrap the clay and build a gate structure from polystyrene then glue it to the parts. Once that's done I'll either build up three mold positive or try doing a one part mold. Jury's still out on that decision. 2mon
