ansies Progress report 7d
  •   ruthaustralia No - it feels quite brittle - I think you need to gather and use quickly. 6d
  •   looselywovenbasketry Looks beautiful - most grasses need to be dried first or they will shrink a lot and your work loses shape. #fibrebasketryhomegrownandhandmade is the best book I know to get started. Contact the fibre basket weavers of South Australia for a copy - we did a bulk order for 5 of us at basketrynsw. It's out of print but they sell photocopied versions. Explains Australian plants. Winter is a great time to cut green grasses and dry the bunches in a warm dark place - in Sydney the humidity makes summer drying harder. I dry most grasses for quite a few weeks. Jacaranda twigs and pine needles can be used straight away - not green needles but brown fallen ones. And then soaking is also a bit of trial and error - if thinks are too wet they will also shrink and your work becomes too loose. Message me any time - there are a few places online with good info also. It really is fun to learn as you go. And you can use stiffening agents on early work that is a bit loose. 6d
  •   ansies Thanks so much Nicole, will look up that book. Looking forward to heaps of experimenting with grasses and rushes etc. Not much (if any) jacaranda around here, but lots of pine. I live in a eucalyptus forest so I'm really into the idea of using what's around me or nearby and in doing so learning about local aboriginal culture #wurundjeri . Stiffening agents sound interesting and I've been wondering about how to retain colour! Will definitely message you! Thanks again 6d

  •   looselywovenbasketry Agree it's all about using what's in your neighbourhood - great way to meet people too! Will check out wurundjeri culture - lucky you :) 6d

ansies Starting something less neat and more 'organic' as @_deborahbrandon_ says. Went foraging in the bush around my house and experimenting with natural and indigenous materials. Very exciting for me. So far have used dead Microleana flowering stems (very dry and brittle, hence the random yellow hemp stitches) and a Juncus species. It's going to be a shield for a wall.. Maybe 1w

ansies Loved the whole day including this bit at the end when everyone was taking photos of the little baskets. Loved how @ruthaustralia had a small ladder for us to get a good perspective. So insta Ruth! Love these days spent with women, creating, chatting, giggling, expressing, sharing. #caughtgramming @iamalchemy . Also pictured @lissydono @sulphurcrested @gennybird and.. 2w

ansies I love this photo, not because its any good but because it captures what I love about the trees at my home. The sculptural forms, the strong lines, the soft tones, the contrast with the skies sometimes odd colours, the way they cover me.. I am them and they are me. We are here together 2w

ansies What fun thanks @_deborahbrandon_ for asking #widn .. Well.. #gettingmyweaveon trying to finish this slightly off centre basket which I'm not liking so much at the mo. Always thinking of my next one.. Might use this Microlaena grass (indigenous) in something small. Billie playing with trains we got from opie on weds. Tummy rumbling, trying not to eat because we're off to Little Joe's for dinner 3w
