anastasiatl Photographers brace themselves as a Sea Stallion (CH-53) helicopter lands in the flight deck of the USS Bataan somewhere between Norfolk, VA and New York City.

They're my Instagram buddies @balazsgardi @anthonybgeathers and @pablounzueta_ Notice the flight deck crew member telling me to get off my knees half way through the video.. I couldn't hardly move the wind was so strong.

anastasiatl A Marine leans through sheets hung between bunk beds to create privacy in the male berthing (living quarters) aboard USS Bataan. I went down there at 6am to make pictures with my 3 male colleagues but since I am a woman, the Marine escorting us woke everyone up by shouting "Female on deck, female on deck" as is procedure.
I was really embarrassed. And just stood there looking at the floor and feeling self conscious for a few minutes before I started working. Women are the minority in the military, women are the minority in photojournalism, and I've spent most of my adult life being the only woman in the room (or at least one of very few) Most of my colleagues are men, and my friends too. I don't mind, I'd just forgotten about this during my sabbatical at Harvard.

  •   kompak7117 great article @anastasiatl 22h
  •   allexxis But there were women serving there already, what was the logic in shouting "female on deck" 19h
  •   anastasiatl @allexxis male and female living quarters are separate. If a man enters the female berthing, they must make sure everyone knows there is a male in the quarters, and vice versa. This is only in the living quarters. Hope that clears it up! 19h
  •   allexxis @anastasiatl Ok, I understand now, thank you 8h

anastasiatl Sea Hawk helicopter taking off from USS Bataan somewhere between Norfolk, VA and New York.
The Marine Corps saw an opportunity to connect directly with the audience/network of Instagram and invited 4 photographers to embed on the USS Bataan. A member of the Instagram community team made introductions and I was brought onboard along with 3 others @balazsgardi @anthonybgeathers @pablounzueta_ What I think is so exciting about this is that the process cuts out the gate-keepers of legacy media, further democratizing photojournalism, and allowing photographers without a traditional assignment to access an embed usually reserved for those working for a magazine or newspaper.
The US military has some history of embedding bloggers, which happened as early as Iraq, but this is a step further in that it doesn’t even require the infrastructure of an external website, but only access to an audience via a social media platform. #fleetweekNYC

  •   stewart.scanlon Hi, we have this problem sometimes. The gps lock the modem needs tells the provider your at sea and won't work unless unlocked. This is how they charge higher rates for the maritime units! Good luck. 1d

anastasiatl Rachel Warford joined the Marines at 18. She saw her life going to down two paths, and thought: "It was jail or the military. My dad was a marine. My grandpa was a marine”. She is from Shelbyville, Kentucky, which she describes as “A 2 road city”. And continues, “We have a stop light now”. Rachel is gay and has been married to her wife for 4 years. She talked to me about the challenges of being gay in the military “We got married the year gay marriage was legalised. For the Marines it got okayed end of 2013. So till then I couldn't even put that I was married on my paper work. It's still not ok. It's the higher-ups. The thing they don't know is there has always been gay people in the military. Boot camp was fucking terrible about that. I don't really care 'ah you faggot' and all that. I don't really care, but it’s always going to effect you”. 1d

anastasiatl Here is Clayton O'Brien again, standing to attention on the flight deck of USS Bataan as we sail into NYC.
He is 15 and a Navy Sea Cadet from Connecticut. He's thinking about applying for a Naval Scholarship to College. So are his friends. This means that the Navy would pay for them to go to university for 4 years and afterwards they would be committed to serving as officers for 4 years.
I spent a few hours touring the USS Bataan with them. Sometimes when I made pictures on my iPhone they'd call out 'Hey, you're gonna be Instagram famous' to the guy I was photographing. #instagramfamous

In the last few days I’ve had a few chances like this one, to tag the person I am photographing, via Instagram. For years, many of the people I photographed didn’t have access to the media I worked for, and as a result didn’t see their images published. One of the most exciting things about using social media, which I believe further democratizes photography, is that I can share the pictures with the people in them.
