alexelrod And the collection grows. My grandma found even more planes from her father and grandfather. Beautiful old Stanley's, PM(?), Union, and the beast in the middle is a No 7 Bailey // Calling all woodworkers! These planes are riddled with rust, some worse off than others, but none feel like they're lost - what is the proper/safest way to clean and restore these?? 1mon
  •   monkwood_ Very nice collection. I can't add to the restoration tips other than using them. Even if not perfect they re break in and come alive over time 1mon
  •   anneofalltrades This is a fantastic collection. Looks like my buddies above already helped out a lot with the restoration questions, but if you have any more let me know! I'm launching my website this week and there is an article that explains in more detail my process 1mon
  •   alexelrod @anneofalltrades : Thank you! I'll definitely look out for that article! 1mon
  •   bluecheak @alexelrod sorry I haven't had a chance to contact you! I was thinking about you on Saturday as I was rubbing some surface rust off a plane. There is a product that Klingspor do. It's a carborundum impregnated rubber block that comes in various grits. They are fantastic for gentle surface repairs. I'll take a pic of one and pm you. 4w
  •   alexelrod @bluecheak : awesome! Bring it on! 4w
  •   matt_wallace Which is the Union? I have a Union n°5 that's an amazing plane. 4w
  •   alexelrod @matt_wallace : I also have the no5! Mine reads "Apr-19-10" 4w
  •   pastranastudio Check out Dr. Ray Lewis's booth inside antique shops off 288 & 35 in Denton. He has so much wisdom when it comes to restoring old hand tools, unfortunately I do not. I also have his contact # if you want it. Hope this helps! 1d

alexelrod Doesn't look like it, but I organized all the new lumber I recently picked up / white oak, red oak, burch, cypress, cedar, and a bit of cherry - excited to see what pieces come out of it all... 3mon
  •   alexelrod @tomcat2587 : this particular wood was purchased from an elderly man that could no longer use it - previously sat in a Kentucky tobacco barn for 20+ years 3mon
  •   tomcat2587 Very cool! 3mon

  •   alexelrod @iamvack : haha nice eye - haven't had a chance to really use it on a project! Love the fence, but needing to 'calibrate' for the bend of the blade 3mon
  •   iamvack Tighten the blade some, that'll help. The thing I hate about it is no miter gauge on it, and the fact that it doesn't fit a standard size miter gauge. 3mon
