alexanderthe @freshselect has named my track, "WILD" one of "Tightest songs of 2014". Fitting for my trip in #Hawaii. This song was inspired by travel, love for nature and preserving roots.  Keep exploring and learn a new artform. Don't let the grid city lock you down. #punzaramba

Traveling is always exciting.  But doing it with your family is the best. There will be tons of challenges along the way.  But with every challenge comes a reward.  It's where frustration meets inspiration. Madness meets freedom. Anger meets love.  When there's hardship, simplicity with show itself.  That's when you become human again.  Home is where the heart is . #Punzaramba

alexanderthe It was amazing to have one of our friends @almamaejor to host us on #Kauai island. Her positive and energetic ora matches the island's charm. No wonder why she moved to this magical island from #Toronto. Aimee showed us both the cultural and fun side to #Kauai.  From kalo farming, meeting with elders, moon ceremony, surfing, kayaking and hiking. Kawayan has an amazing Ninang (Godmother). Mahalo. Thank you.  #punzaramba #kapwa 3w

alexanderthe Tonight marks the full moon and Kaleo's 6 months full moon cycle.  He was born on a super moon and Jace as his middle name means moon/healer.  So tonight we'll be having our moon ceremony at the beach.  Also found out Kai in Hawaiian means 'the ocean'. How fitting.  See clearer in the dark. #punzaramba #Hawaii #Kauai with @jenmaramba & @almamaejor 3w

alexanderthe 24 hours later, I've decided to project the image of my 'chink' car on the streets in club land (Adelaide & Simcoe). 'They' can use their medium to project hate on my car. I use my medium to project the hate that surrounds us. I took to the streets where I know best to get some feedback.  I stood back as I kept my ear to the ground to hear a bunch of different comments about the projected image.  Over time I'd hear some people saying 'that's horrible!' or 'WTF?!?'. A good 10 minutes into it, I'd hear a bunch of guys laugh and point at the image 'hahaha.. CHINK!!' as they go on their ignorant ways through the entertainment district. A group of Asians passed through, stared at the image for a while looked at the source and then moved on.  I knew it hit them,  in ways that were too real.  Why would I project such a thing?  I felt it was important to let our society know the status of our humanity. Most importantly, a city that believes in the strength of being multi-cultural. Is it not a Toronto mandate?  I stuck around for as long as it took me to wipe this image off of my car.  It made me realize when we don't understand each other it's easy to be insensitive to our neighbours.  As we grow as a larger city so do our ignorance.  This is why educating will keep us from being racist ignorant people. I am glad to have found others that not only share similar views but act upon them.  Even build upon them.  My kids will know more about their roots than I'll ever dream of because of my community. My kids will know more about YOUR roots than I'll ever dream of because of my city.  Because I will make the efforts to.  We need to make personal efforts to bring us closer to equality.

To keep us all on our feet and help destroy racism.  I will continue to do my part.

  •   cmangodesign Been thinking about you and this notion that some people choose to believe that we live in a post-racial society. With disgusting acts like this happening on an individual level along with race related crime acquittals like what's happening with Darren Wilson, how can anyone deny that racial discrimination is STILL so deeply entrenched in our society?? I applaud you for the noble way you've responded to this attack and as always, applaud you for the work you continue to do as an artist/friend/father in our community, in our city and beyond. You are important. Much love. 2mon
  •   cmangodesign Also...I experienced a racial attack over ten years ago that I still feel deeply scarred by. Seeing this happen to you a decade later is a disheartening reminder that wisdom & consciousness in our world is brutally outnumbered by ignorance. But the fight must continue to be fought! I hate that this happened to you but thank for sharing and opening up dialogue. 2mon

alexanderthe I don't understand why we still live in a world where WE can negativly take pleasure in someone else's ethnicity. It happened at 2 am last night as I walked into Rexall to pick up some medicine for my sick 5 year old son.  It only took 5 min to disturb me to the core. As I walk back to my car i see the freshly coated paint,  my first reaction was confusion. Am I really being racially targeted here?  I mean,  I work endlessly in my community as a professional with other cultures to build a better Toronto.  I've been a victim of racism before but haven't we matured as a society yet?
The next day I spent 30 minutes on my hands and knees wiping this word 'chink' off of my car.  How would you be feeling for 30 mins if someone wrote a hate crime on yours?  Or even driving home with that shit on there.
I love graffiti art and support all artists to keep it up.  But when it comes down to vandalizing & hate crime. I DO NOT TOLERATE THAT.
Please don't feel sorry for me.  Just be aware that we are not a healthy society.  It may be easy for us to say Canadians are not racist.  But truthfully it happens very discretely.  Please continue to educate our youths. We really need to find solutions soon.
To an endlessly growing #Toronto, I love you but hate still lies deep within you.
Negative only feeds more negative.

LOVE,

Alex Punzalan

  •   lizziec1981 Wtf?? This pisses me off! I am not naive or blind to racial hate we still face in this day, however still suprised to see it exist when it happens. I stress to educate my kid's so they don't become assholes to society, all they see is the different beauties between different cultures. I've explained blended families, because this is the world we live in and should not be judged in general on race, religon, sexuality or anything! ! I hope I am doing enough on my part to prepare them for the world so they don't become little pricks lkke the one (s) who did this to you. I don't feel sorry for you @alexanderthe, I feel sorry for the situation as a whole and for iur children's future's. Things aren't getting any better, they're getting worse. Your an amazing person and proud of what you do for tje community- keep it up :) xo 2mon

  •   thomas.gagnon.coupal I am a white man who works in a blue colar environment. There is one thing I can tell after 4 years living in the gta. Canadians, regardless of the color or the origins they have are racists still. Sadly. I hope my little mestisas will grow without being affected by it, I will do whatever to make sure. Amour. 2mon
  •   alexanderthe Thanks everyone for your support and comments. Car is cleaned, mind is now scarred. Look for any kids with gold ink on their hands. @polangko I'll gather up Chinatown and you bring Markham when the time comes. Be ready. #cantmesswithasiannumbers 2mon
  •   sammyjade Sending you and your fam love. Sharing your experience helps for open discussion. We need to educate, not only the youth but everyone. The older, the "wiser", the fam, the friend, the colleague. I actually experienced some racism today too. It was discreet and indirect. However whatever it was---it still got to me. Xo 2mon
  •   sammyjade @thomas.gagnon.coupal They will be affected and experience it.It's inevitable. They will be ok They will grow up with integrity and love. They will be fierce gyals 2mon
