alanachernila Our very last @guidosfreshmarketplace picnic which we ate on #monumentmountain : antipasto, local blueberries, sungold tomatoes, sourdough bread and hummus, and a special cheese from our dear friends Max and Amy who have Grace Hill Farm in Cummington. And of course a little cake to fuel us the rest of the way #guidosfresh #slowberkshires @thetrustees @berksfarmtable 3h

alanachernila My grandparents ran a little bed and breakfast in Great Barrington for years, and my grandmother used to buy all the linens she could at Country Curtains. Sometimes we'd go into the lobby at @redlioninn and she'd run her hands over the upholstered couches and heavy drapes, admiring and loving it all. Sure enough, our room is filled with great fabrics, and everything picks up the color of the walls or the light from outside in a way my grandmother would have deeply appreciated. It's warm and welcoming and so so pretty. #slowberkshires #redlioninn #patienceandaugustcomes @berksfarmtable #visitma #visittheberkshires 9h

alanachernila Yesterday at Naumkeag, we ended up spending hours in the gardens. Just out of bounds of the manicured section is a long stone bench built right into the hill. There was a little mowed path through the wildflowers, but other than that it was left to its own devices. It sat on a square of bricks that held the most beautiful tiny weed bouquets between their cracks, and the bench itself was in the process of being consumed by weeds and wildflowers. But the view! Maybe that space was built for the farmers who worked in the fields below? Or more likely, I imagine, the owner built it as an escape- a hidden patch of wildness out of the way where no one would disturb you. It had been hard for me to find the words on why I love living somewhere with so much history, but I thought about it there on the bench. Imagining people right here, living their lives and thinking their thoughts for so many generations--it makes me feel like I'm just one tiny moment in the ongoing story of this place. It's as if just by being here I've become part of it. #slowberkshires #patienceandaugustcomes #berkshirehistory @thetrustees @berksfarmtable #visitma @yankeemagazine 11h

alanachernila Ginger gimlet, @redlioninn porch. Think day lilies, rocking chairs, and everyone on their way to Tanglewood. I could have sat there forever. #slowberkshires patienceandaugustcomes #summerofGreylock #drinkwhereyoulive @berksfarmtable 20h

alanachernila Today's #naumkeag picnic: cold roast chicken, berry soup, arugula with nectarines and burrata, chips and hummus, classic and wonderful potato salad, and cookies. @guidosfreshmarketplace , this one may have been my favorite. The shade was good, we picked an excellent patch of lawn, and we had a spread that would have satisfied even Mabel Choate herself. #guidosfresh #slowberkshires @thetrustees @berksfarmtable 1d

alanachernila If you have never been to the gardens at #naumkeag , you need to do it. I've been here before, but it's even more beautiful than I remember. #slowberkshires #patienceandaugustcomes @berksfarmtable @thetrustees 1d

alanachernila Sometimes we get to walk on tiny roads we've never been on, and other times are different. Today we're walking down rt. 7 towards Stockbridge. It's bright and hot and the semis are barreling by. But this is our route to school, probably the stretch we drive most often. And still we keep having to stop. We keep finding places we've never seen before. #slowberkshires #patienceandaugustcomes @takemagazine #visitma @berksfarmtable 1d

alanachernila #Repost @berksfarmtable with @repostapp.

If there's one thing I've learned this week, it's that I'm a big fan of a good Picnic. With wine. On a hill with a view. In front of a mansion. In just a few days were back to our normal life but until then , #guidosfresh #cranwell #slowberkshires
・・・
These are the faces behind the beautiful words and poetic images of SlowBerkshires this week. Here at @cranwellresort with a picnic meant for @tanglewoodberkshires, the sky cast a new plan on the evening. Armed with delicious goodies and lovely flowers from @guidosfreshmarketplace, we camped out in front of the historic hilltop mansion. Thought we were busted when a golf cart pulled up near our strategically placed blanket, only to switch out an Adirondack chair that didn't match the almost-perfect set of three. Whew!
Alana and Joey, keep walking south, capturing moments and sharing stories... we'll see you at the border!. @alanachernila @aoristtargaryen #slowberkshires #lovewhereyoulive #berkshirepicnics #mysummerinnewengland @takemagazine @yankeemagazine @visitma

alanachernila Rained out for @tanglewood but we still get to have our favorite part: the picnic! @guidosfreshmarketplace made us my dream tanglewood picnic, and it was just as delicious in front of the @cranwellresort mansion. #slowberkshires #guidosfresh #tanglewood @berksfarmtable 2d

alanachernila Really, it was this porch at Melville's house that inspired this whole walk. Joey and I read "The Piazza" together way before I dragged him across the country to move to the Berkshires. That first fall here, I was pregnant with Sadie, and we didn't have jobs, and we spent hours here, taking the tour, sitting on this porch, fascinated by the story of this man who loved it here but just didn't belong. And although Melville calls his porch and his story "the piazza," it really is just a simple little porch. His words are grand, but the structure is small and functional. It's main purpose is for looking out on the fields, the mountains, and the sky. It's hot and hazy but if you really look you can see Mt. Greylock, Melville's Charlemagne and his mighty whale. But my favorite thing about this house is how present Melville is here. Whether he haunts it himself or just with his words- I don't know. "No fence was seen, no inclosure. Near by--ferns, ferns, ferns; further--woods, woods, woods; beyond--mountains, mountains, mountains; then--sky, sky, sky" - from Melville, The Piazza #patienceandaugustcomes #slowberkshires #visitma #arrowhead @yankeemagazine #newenglandsummer @berksfarmtable 2d

alanachernila Today we cross over the line from north to south county. There's a definite division (even, sometimes an enmity) between the two and as a south county girl, I can definitely say I don't make it up here often enough. But we've had such a good time up here. It's a different landscape- grander, wider, and more nestled into the hills. Everyone we've spoken to has been so kind- we've learned about family histories and mills and GE and all the generations picnicking on the lakes and running up and down North St. It really is a different county up here- or maybe I'm just seeing it differently? I guess we'll find out when we cross the great invisible line at Park Square. #slowberkshires #patienceandaugustcomes #discoverpittsfield #hotelonnorth @hotelonnorth #visittheberkshires #visitma @berksfarmtable @takemagazine 2d

alanachernila Do I quote the Melville poem or do I just say the poem is bad? Anyway, Melville was a big fan of Pontoosuc lake. He wrote a poem about it. #slowberkshires #patienceandaugustcomes #visitma #newenglandsummer @berksfarmtable 3d
