afroveganchick I feel like television is forcing us into interracial relationships. Haven't seen a network black couple since #TheCosbyShow. #nofilter 3w
  •   frolikewhoa nah. There's nothing wrong with marginalized folx wanting to see positive representations of love between ppl just like them in pop culture. I say this as someone in an IRR. Colorblindness is a form of racism. 3w
  •   afroveganchick @ellefire I'm agreeing with @frolikewhoa here. There is nothing wrong with desiring black love on television especially when it's so rare. And to say "I don't see skin tone" is one thing when television and media celebrates only one- the most dominate being white. Don't define your views from watching one program. And as for the Cosby Show it defined love in a positive light for our culture. That's not being seen today. 3w
  •   ellefire @frolikewhoa To respond to you...oh wait, I can't because you didn't tag me in your response, your full comment is unavailable, and your profile is set at private. But if I have to guess, you called me a racist. I feel like that is based on the fact you don't realize I am speaking as someone who has heavily experience racism. As for me wanting to have people that look like me loving each other, I am not holding out hope for that. I am racially ambiguous looking and that's how I like it. I loving people trying to guess my race and failing miserably. I love that I can go to any country and no one will know that I am a foreigner. I love my culture, but I refuse to let it define me. Who am I to tell anyone who should kiss who? I am no Romance Gestapo! As for you @afroveganchick, you and I one night had a long conversation about the interracial couples and race, so I really don't understand this shift in opinion. I am also very disappointed that you would allow someone to call one of your friends a racist and then agree with them. Particularly since you know my story. It never crossed my mind to call anyone a racist, I was giving you my point of view. 3w
  •   amadi @ellefire Fall back. Yes, colorblindness is a form of racism. You cannot refuse to acknowledge such an important factor in people's lives and pretend that you see or respect them. You do no one any favors with pretending race is meaningless. The reality is that intact living and loving black couples on television are a rarity, and intact black families even more so. This represents us in a negative light, the general public takes away an idea that black couples and nuclear black families don't exist because they don't see them. It feeds the particularly ugly fiction that black fathers are absent and uninvolved with their children. It feeds narratives that black women are unlovable, and that when we have children it's always as single mothers, which is viewed as a moral failing. People take these messages from the media they consume. The last family I can recall was the family of the director on NCIS but then they killed off his wife. They killed off Taye Diggs' black wife on his new show practically before she existed. There's a black couple on Major Crimes but they're just dating and because it's a procedural we don't see it, we just heard about it in passing. I'm looking at the final ratings list for network TV for this past season and I'm trying to pick out a show that has an intact black couple and I haven't hit one yet. Not one. Certainly not one in the top 30 shows of the season. This is a massive representation problem. Massive. Our real lives and our real families should be reflected in American media just as much as white people's, but they aren't. 3w
  •   afroveganchick First of all, no one called you a racist @elletag. So I have nothing to defend in that arena. That was harsh of you to make such a strong accusation. You do not get to wave condescending finger at me or say “I'm disappointed.” The whole “I don't see color” is a red flag. Colors exist and you cannot pretend otherwise. That is the same sentence jurors used when choosing not to convict Zimmerman for kiling an innocent African American child. Shift? What do you mean shift? I never stated that I despise interracial relationships. I'm saying that, “Black on black couples don't exist on television.” Because they don't. Period. And I'm not sorry for stating obvious facts. Like @amadi has addressed- it would be nice to see positive, genuine depictions of African Americans in love with one another and raising families together sans struggling and stereotyping. It shouldn't always be a primarily white/white or white/ethnicity commodity. God. It's like we're still in a 50's Norman Rockwell painting. We don't exist unless commiserating outside of our race- at least that's how whitewashed Hollywood spins it. 3w
  •   ellefire @amadi You are uninformed and out of bounds. Colorblindness is a condition, so I don't feel comfortable using someone's disability to push an agenda. Let's just not use that. My comments are not about racism, they are about bullying. This insights bullying. I have a friend who is half black and half Jewish, who has sent me link after link of articles where people are being bullied over interracial couplings on TV. She and I have stopped watching a TV show recently because the producers gave into the bullying and broke the interracial couple apart. In fact, they killed off the white guy and put the girl with a black man. To make matters worse, just last week I heard they brought back the white guy and killed off the girl. The bullying has gone out of hand in the past year where interracial couples are concerned. There is a commercial that was pulled off TV because people were offended that it showed an interracial family. The actress was getting death threats. Four of the shows I watch used to have interracial pairings but they broke up without reason and characters were put back in their racial couplings. I could go on and on about this. People telling people their not black enough because they kiss someone who is white...not nice! Don't even get me started on people using slave references to bully other people. I agree that with the popularity of Scandal, networks are trying to emulate that formula and at times it's a complete fail because the actors don't have chemistry. Any interracial couple won't do. There is a South African comedian I love named Trevor Noah who has a comedy tour called Born A Crime. He talks about his struggles of being a product of an interracial couple and how his mother would be arrested if she was caught holding his hand. He then talks about black culture in America and how he was shocked by our system of having to check a box about his race while filling out paperwork. You should YouTube him. 3w
  •   frolikewhoa @ellefire I simply forgot to tag you, the aggression isn't necessary. I didn't call you a racist and I'm 100% allowed to have a private profile, am I not? I really encourage you to google "colorblind racism" and read some short links about why saying "I don't see color" is really, really harmful to the people of color around you. Again, there's nothing wrong with marginalized people wanting to see positive representations of tier relationships in pop culture. This goes for minorities, disabled folk, lgbt* people, etc. It's not bullying for us to say "I'd really like to see a show with a girl who looks like me and a boyfriend that is black like mine" that doesn't rely on racist tropes. We are not post racial and it's dangerous to act like we are. 3w
  •   amadi Seriously, tell me why I'm supposed to give half a tinkers dam about interracial couples being broken up on your favorite little show when there are LITERALLY ZERO INTACT BLACK FAMILIES ON US PRIME TIME TELEVISION. I could not possibly care less. And this had less than nothing to do with bullying. Stop talking. Start listening. 3w
