aaron_rayburn @brettboywonder absorbing the alpenglow on his first visit this far up the Nch'i-Wana. Only two rattlesnakes seen on the way home! And a bat that wanted to eat my face. 1 Peregrine Falcon and several huge ravens barking at us along the ridge. 4d

aaron_rayburn A buns-free version of a sunset I will never forget. First the pink glow was on the mountains, then 2 minutes later it was in the sky behind them. Even the Mosquitos stopped biting for a moment to check this view out. #traveloregon 1w

aaron_rayburn From right to left: Mt. Washington, Three Fingered Jack, Mt. Jefferson, and way in the left corner the summit of Mt. Hood peeking around Jefferson Park, which I still have not visited. On the right is a recent lava flow from the Collier Cone on the Belknap Crater, a pine beetle and burn area, and haze in the distance from several wild fires. Oregon still changing before our eyes. 1w
  •   aaron_rayburn @mr0tt it appears they are East of the mountain, but I'm with you that place is sacred 1w
  •   mr0tt I camped on the summit of Park Ridge last year. Amazing view and the fires we could see at night were amazing. When you get up there be sure to check out the ridge. 1w

aaron_rayburn An old friend in the wildfire haze. Love learning more about the layers of history here.
This main feature is what is left of a 40 million year old caldera that stretches about 230 square miles in Oregon's high desert. It must have been magnificent violence.

Most of the crags at Smith Rock are made up of welded tuff, a rock that forms when hot ash, sprayed into the atmosphere from a volcanic eruption, settles onto the Earth’s surface in a thick sheet, hardening as it cools. Like lava, when ash cools it contracts, sometimes forming giant columns separated by vertical cracks.

Later, only about .5 million years ago liquid basalt flowed into the region pushing the Crooked River into it's current winding course. The basalt table can be seen in the middle left of this photo.
So, in one image we are looking into a 40 million year old layered time capsule. Time travel.

aaron_rayburn North and Middle Sister waking up over Scott Lake. The Sisters arc region contains around 466 volcanoes that lie on the Cascade Crest on a north to south line, which means sunrise and sunsets are the best time to view them. Fully immersed in Oregon's volcanic legacy, nothing but a series of unimaginable catastrophes. Lots of life lessons up in here. Stillness and quiet is an illusion, change is everywhere. 2w

aaron_rayburn Maybe best sunrise I've ever witnessed. Oregon till I die. Amazing that I've never explored the Sisters Wilderness till now, so much more to see, more portals to inner dimensions and crystal blue lakes under volcanoes 2w
