_s_c_p_ Tuesday Observations:
With so much of what we do in the world being influenced by gender categories I find it interesting that asana poses shared on Instagram follow the same suit. I'm not saying it's bad or good, it just makes me wonder about the implications that can come from such a strong focus on specific images.

  •   freedivegirl Haha this is so true, never thought much about it before but now that you mention it, there are definite trends in male/female preferred shapes. Men's trending towards being strong and linear and women's being nonlinear and more bendy. Is this just a physical representation of the different body compositions or something deeper? I tend to think it's a combination, consciousness/unconsciousness of appearing vulnerable???? That's my initial thought. What do you think?  1w
  •   _s_c_p_ @freedivegirl I think we as humans have a tendency to flock to the things that feel more "natural" or "comfortable". So I totally understand that guys are more prone to the muscly, strength poses while women seem to prefer the more curvy and bendy poses. I think part of it is the empowerment that comes from strength or sexuality (for lack of a better term) but I also believe that part of it is the effects of social stereotypes regarding gender categories. I don't think sharing ones asana practice is a bad thing, but I do think the focus on body image might convolute the actual yoga practice. But that's just my current observation. In the end, it really is to each their own. 1w
  •   freedivegirl Mmmm I think too that because we are sharing art (photography) over this square, there is the tendency to "shape" the pose to make a better picture. And so we tend to emphasis the female/male shapes because that is what we have been taught is desirable from an aesthetic value. We do this all the time in modeling, it is less about the pose, but more about the shape of the body. This is a great topic for further inspection. You should write up something for Elephant Journal. :))) 1w

_s_c_p_ This is a great hip and back opener for anyone looking to bring a lil lovin to their body.
Bring your right leg to sit parallel to your body and bring your left leg to sit atop your right, your left foot sitting on top of your right knee (if you are tight in the hamstrings or hips, bring your left leg to sit parallel in front of your right leg). With an inhale, fill your chest and lift lightly out of your hips. With your exhale let your body fold forward, bringing your chest towards your legs and forehead towards the ground. Allow your back to gently round and your head to rest on your arms, hands, a blanket, a pillow or the ground. Hold for 3-5 minutes and then gently push yourself back up to a seated position, stretch your legs out and allow your body to extend, lying back, face up with arms out to your side.

_s_c_p_ I was tagged to share a part of my yoga practice so here is a breathing technique for anyone in need of releasing stress, feeling out of balance (logically, creatively, emotionally), in need of calming and centering the mind, suffering from respiratory problems, chakra alignment, or wanting to maintain body temperature.

Nadi Shodhana (alternate nasal breathing): Nadi Shodhana is a breathing technique that cleanses the energy passages (meridians) of your body. The practice not only cleanses but also balances energies on both sides of the body—yin and yang.
Using the right hand, fold the middle two fingers down into the palm, leaving your thumb, pinky, and ring finger extended. The right thumb will be used to close your right nostril while your pinky and ring finger will be used to close your left nostril.

Beginning with the left side: exhale, and then use your right thumb to press against the right nostril, closing it. Now inhale for a count of four through the left nostril, then release the right side while closing the left side with your pinky and ring finger, and exhale for a count of four. Complete the cycle by inhaling on the right side; close it and open the left side, then exhale. Continue for 8 to 12 cycles.
