_manisa_ A small walled-in sea bath, nestled in the boulders at Sea Point. The shells on the sand make it look like the water is a galaxy. So. Beautiful. #capetown 2w

_manisa_ The Bo-Kaap area has traditionally been Cape Town's Muslim area, and where a lot of the freed slaves were settled after emancipation in 1834. Our tour guide said that the coloured houses started because of one doctor that decided to paint his house a bright red to help when giving directions. We also got told a story about the newly-freed slaves having a festival where they dressed up in super bright colours and painted their faces white to annoy their previous owners. My quick google search didn't bring up any proof of this story, but let's just all agree to believe it, hey :) #capetown #bokaap 2w

_manisa_ On the walk along the sea front, #capetown - "KOM OOR DIE SEE makes use of lyrics of a popular Kaapse-klopse slave song ... The artwork points to South Africa's history of colonialism and slavery, the site's history of those who arrived hoping for a better life here, and the many who arrived in chains. The work is made of valueless material, an aluminium and plastic composite with a mirror finish, reflecting the viewers as they walk past, and the Sea Point sea front behind, and the translation in English meaning, that refers to "us all" coming from over the sea" 2w

_manisa_ The other day I went to a photo exhibition where the photos, and the stories they told, were co-created by the woman who were the subjects. These women were all currently involved in, or just out of, the sex trade in and around Cape Town. Some of the stories of disadvantage, abuse, rape, and hopelessness were incredibly sad. However, some of the photos were of the women with their families, or with their best friends, or celebrating their bodies, or of their dreams. They were proud and hopeful. If anyone wants to know more about the exhibition or about some of the work being done to redress the imbalances of power and the violence inherent in sex work in this country, go to www.embracedignity.org.za #capetown 2w

_manisa_ Former inmates now take tours around the prison complex on Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela and others who fought against apartheid were incarcerated. The systematic racism of apartheid is horrifying, and the stories of the people who fought it, inspiring. #capetown 2w
