radiocitymusichall David Bowie first broke into mainstream American culture with the 1969 track “Space Oddity” and his Ziggy Stardust alter ego. By 1974, he would make his first appearances at Radio City Music Hall in October and November of that year, having taken on various iconic makeovers that would come to define his career.

The major North American tour Bowie planned for 1974 was one of the most extravagant rock ‘n’ roll tours mounted to date, with Broadway designers, choreographer Toni Basil and an elaborate set with a 40-foot cherry-picker that took the singer high above the crowd. But three months later, Bowie was back in New York City, bringing a revamped, leaner, funkier version of the “Diamond Dogs” tour to Radio City Music Hall for an eight-show run. The shows kicked off with “Rebel, Rebel,” ended with “Rock ‘n’ Roll Suicide,” and featured a new, unreleased song called “Young Americans,” which he’d just recorded. For Bowie, it was the end of glam, and the beginning of what he often called his “plastic soul” period, and would go on to become one of the theater’s most memorable runs. #DavidBowie (Photo Credit: Steve Morley/Getty Images)
