gettysburgvisitorcenter From the Collections: Rectangular pine trunk with hinged lid with markings on the front “SURG. H. JANES/CAMP LETTERMAN.” Union Major Henry Janes, surgeon in charge of Camp Letterman, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania from July to December 1863. Henry Janes was from Waterbury, Vermont and was commissioned as a Surgeon into the Field and Staff of the 3rd Vermont Infantry on June 24, 1861. On March 26, 1863 he was commissioned into the US Volunteers Medical Staff. He was promoted to Brevet Lt. Colonel on March 13, 1865 and mustered out on April 1, 1866.
