harlowchandler 300 block William Street, Fredericksburg, 9:32am. Repaving is in full swing, the asphalt has been ground down, showing large patches of cobblestone.
The City's first major paving project, the laying of these stones was done by the firm of Cartwright and Davis in 1904 at a cost of $13,910 to the City. The pavement ran up William (then Commerce) Street to Hurkamp Park (known for a time as City park, now once again Hurkamp) and down Princess Anne St (then Main) to Lafayette boulevard, then known as Prussia St.
Although the use of ballast stones from European ships arriving otherwise empty to bring back goods was a common means of procuring paving stone these are in fact local granite from an unknown quarry near the City and not Belgian, as is sometimes stated.
