artcyclopaedia Frank Stella, “Harran II”, 1967

Frank Stella is an American-born artist, who connects himself with the movement of Hard-edge painting. Stella works in style of post-figurative abstractions, which he developed in late 1950’s. he was inspired by works of Barnett Newman and Jasper Johns, and started creating art works as objects, rather than art works as representation of the real. “Harran II” is, probably, Stella’s most famous art work, which belongs to “Protractor” series. the painting has a vivid and saturated palette, and truly is a beautiful work, which represents beauty and harmony within a transformation.

currently, Stella lives and works in New York. don’t miss last few days of his exhibition at Whitney Museum, New York!

artcyclopaedia Bruce Nauman, “Self-Portrait as a Fountain”, 1966

in his work, Nauman often questions role of the creator. in this photograph, which is part of Nauman’s “Photographic Suite” series, which includes eleven photographs based on puns, Nauman is posing in front of the camera shirtless. the artist is standing with his palms open, splashing a steam of water out of his mouth. Nauman is imitating a traditional pose, given to sculptures seen on decorative fountains.

the artist is definitely referring back to Duchamp’s famous “Fountain” (1917), by which Nauman is joining Duchamp in questioning medium and technique of arts.

Nauman is an artist who works in many different ways - using neon, fibreglass, ready-made object, photography and, indeed, his own body. following Nauman's works, a spectator sees a trace of artists inspirations, one of which is an idea of transparency and hiddenness.
